Introduction

Anhui University, the only key comprehensive provincial in- stitution, is located in Hefei, the beautiful capital city of Anhui Province. Founded in 1928 in Anqing and moved to Hefei in 1958, Anhui University is now a developing higher institution supported by the government under the state "211 Project".

Anhui University covers an area of about 733,700 meters aquare and a new area of about 1,334,000 meters square under construction. Its library has a collection of more than 1.75 million books and over 7000 Chinese and foreign periodicals, and it is equipped with a campus computer network. Anhui University consists of 15 schools, 34 departments, 30 scientific research institutes, 40 graduate and Ph.D programs,1 graduate program of Law Major,52 four-year schooling majors and one business management major as secondary major;2 national key subjects, 12 provincial ---level subjects; one key laboratory of Educational Department,one key research base of Human and Social Science and engineering center and 3 provincial-lever key laboratories.The University is also one of first approved 15 units carrying on College Scientific Park Construction and education base of culture and quality for national college students.

The University has a teaching staff of 998, and among them are 152 professors and 527 associate professors. And the student po pulation totals 14000.

The University attaches great importance to international exchange and cooperation. Now, it has entered into agreements with 43 overseas institutions. It began to accept foreign students in 1980. It is authorized by the Ministry of Education to enroll international students and those who enjoy Chinese government scholarships. It was designated Teaching Base for Chinese Language and Culture by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office under the State Council in 2000. Up to date, more than 800 international students from Asia, America and Europe have been admitted to study at the University.

Anhui Province is rich in natural scenic spots and historic places of interest, such as, Mount Huangshan, listed by UNESCO as natural and cultural heritages and ancient folk houses in Xidi and Hongcun villages as cultural heritages; Mount Jiuha, one of the four Buddhist shrines; Mount Qiyun, one of the four Taoist shrines. With Yangtze River and Huaihe River across Anhui Province and with a galaxy of men of letters, Anhui has been famous for its rich and colorful local culture, especially, Hui Culture in South Anhui and Huaihe Culture in North Anhui. Scholars and students are welcome to teach, study and conduct research at the University.
