ncwu2(1).jpg (12963 bytes)The Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE), which used to be under the governance of the Ministry of Finance and was transferred to the Ministry of Education in February 2000, is a comprehensive university with a main focus on economics and management, and an additional focus on law and Chinese literature. The purpose of the university is to assist in the development of socialism market economy. The main responsibility is to train first-class specialized personnel in management, teaching and research for organizations such as government finance and taxation departments, banking and insurance institutions, corporations, enterprises, colleges, universities and research institutes.

CUFE started out as the Central Taxation School that was established in November 1949. Since then, the university has undergone several name changes: Central Institute of Finance, Central Institute of Finance and Economics, Central Institute of Finance and Banking, and finally in May 1996, the university was named as the Central University of Finance and Economics. According to the decision made by the Ministry of Finance on October 29, 1998 and the decision made by the Ministry of Education in February 2000, CUFE acquired the Central Institute for Financial Administrators. The main campus is located at 39 South College Road, Haidian District, Beijing , China . It has two other campuses, one in Qinghe , Haidian District and the other in Fushouling , Shijinshan District .

At present, CUFE has 12 departments including public finance, banking , accounting , taxation , insurance , economics , economic management , investment economy , information management , law and Chinese , a Graduate Office and an Adult Education Institute . The university has the authority to award bachelor degrees in economics, management, law, etc. After the revision of course enrollment catalogues for undergraduate and graduate studies by the Ministry of Education in 1998, CUFE offers bachelor degrees in the following areas:

1. Economics ---majoring in economics, public finance, banking, international economy and trade, statistics, national economic management and insurance (the latter two majors are specially approved by the Ministry of Education);

2. Management ---majoring in accounting, financial management, business administration, marketing, project and information management and information system, labor and social security, human resources management, public utilities administration and managerial science .

3. Law --- majoring in economic law;

4. Literature--- majoring in Chinese language and literature, and journalism. Additionally, CUFE offers 3 specializations: CPA, taxation, and e-business.

CUFE confers masters degree in 8 areas: public finance, banking, accounting , industrial economics , national economics , economics , statistics and economic law , confers doctoral degree in 4 areas : national economics , banking , accounting and public finance .

The adult education program services the community in various ways: full time program, correspondence program , evening school and advanced vocational training program . CUFE has set up 33 correspondence stations in 15 provinces, cities and autonomous regions across China to offer subjects in public finance (including taxation), banking , insurance , marketing, accounting , project management, etc., for college diploma and, for college graduates, bachelor degree .

The total number of students in CUFE is 13000, over 5000 of which are full time undergraduates and masters and doctoral candidates. The number of staff is 986, of which 415 are full time faculty with 200 being professors and associate professors. Quite a number of the professors are well known in China. The university also invites hundreds of famous experts and scholars from both China and other countries as guest professors. The university covers an area of 378 mu(1hectare=15mu) and the building area is 19000 square meters . The library stores 600000+ books. The total value of the fixed assets is 218.28million RMB, of which 20 million are teaching and research equipment. The university has the teaching equipment and facilities essential for the modernized higher education in economics, such as the language lab, the computer lab , the multi-media classroom, etc.

CUFE makes great efforts to facilitate international exchange and cooperation. It has established extensive relations with universities and organizations in other countries, e.g., USA, Japan , Britain , Australia , South Korea , Russia , Ukraine , and Hong Kong , Macao and Taiwan regions . The university has a long history of cooperating with the World Bank Institute . In 1983, the World Bank Institute opened a cooperative training center at CUFE and more than 20 waves of training have been held . The university also has good relations with organizations such as the Zurich Financial Services Group , Asahi & Co , the AX Insurance Group , Metropolitan Life Insurance Company . The Institute of Actuary in Britain , the Chartered Insurance Institute in Britain and the Australian Insurance Institute has set up their exam centers at CUFE . Besides the foreign experts who are contracted to teach English and some of the specialized courses for at least one semester, CUFE invites scores of foreign experts for joint research and short time lectures and sends its faculty to other countries as lecturers , joint researchers and to participate in advanced studies every year . CUFE also recruits students from other countries and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions every year. .

On October 29, 1999, President Jiang Zemin provided an inscription for CUFE's 50th anniversary:"Work hard to make the Central University of Finance and Economics a successful university and to train high quality managerial personnel for the process of modernization" . The inscription by President Jiang Zemin embodies the care and concern of our Party and our national leaders. The inscription also puts forward high requirements for CUFE's building and development, strengthens the university's confidence to make CUFE better and inspires the university community to devote themselves to the reform of higher education. CUFE will firmly follow the requirements of the Party and the State Council, adhere to the direction of socialism, grasp all opportunities, further develop the reforms, be creative and innovative , fully promote quality education and make more contributions to the nation's rejuvenation through science and technology .

I. A Survey of International Students IN CUFE

CUFE attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchange. For the purpose of enhancing culture communicating, and satisfying the needs of international friends of learning Chinese language as well as studying economy of China, CUFE authorized by Beijing Education Commission to award Bachelor and Master degrees and hold Chinese language training started to re-enroll international students in 1994.

Up to now, CUFE has had some 300 students from Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, France, Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, America, Australia and Mali. They all have made and have been making their every effort to learn Chinese language or study Economics and Chinese law.

CUFE is famous for its elegant studying setting on its safe campus, where all the international students and Chinese students lead a happy life in the course of academic study.

A ANGUAGE STUDY

1 A Brief Introduction of CHINESE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT (CLD)

CLD of CUFE assumes the responsibility of Chinese language Teaching for international students; its 24 teaching staff, including 14 professors and associate professors, makes a solid ground of highly effective language teaching and training. At present, Journalism, Financial Secretary and Chinese Literature are available in CLD.

Courses for Journalism: A Survey of Journalism, Journalism in China, Journalism in the West, Interviewing and Writing in Journalism, Editing and Commenting in Journalism, Mass Media Science, Science of Photography in Journalism, etc.;

Courses for Financial Secretary: Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Literature, Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern Chinese Literature, Comparative Literature, Rhetoric, Communications, Administration and Management, Advertisement, Sociology, Western Economics, Accounting, Finance, Monetary Banking, Economic Law, etc.;

2. Teaching Arrangement.

(1) curricula: Oral Chinese, Listening Comprehension, Intensive Reading, Audio-Video Classes and News paper Reading; special courses on the historic sites to better the students' understanding of Chinese culture and history; calligraphy, painting , poetry, martial, shadowboxing, etc.,

(2) Schedule: 8:00 a.m.-12:00 a.m. in weekdays;

Appendix: 1. Equipment and furniture available in dormitory include: TV, telephone,

washing machine, closet, kitchen, desk, wardrobe, heating;

2. Only Chinese currency (RMB) is accepted; tuition should be

paid by year or semester, and dormitory fee by month.
