Sanming,a famous civil and hygienic city,directly under Fujian Province,is located northwestern Fujian in the mountain area between Wuyi Mountain and Daiyun Mountain.It is a newly developing industrial city and an important green-tri-angle tourism region. With a population of 2,500thousand,the city covers an area of 22,959 square kilometers,among which the urban area is 1,178 square kilometers.It administers Yongan City,Shanyuan District,Meilie District and Mingxi,Qingliu,Ninghua,Da-tian,Sha County,Youxi,Jiangle,Taining and Jianning. 73.8 % of the area is covered with forest .Its climate has subtropical characteristics,with an annual
average temperature of 19.4 centigrade. Summer is long while winter is short.All these make the city a favorable tourism region in all seasons.

Sanming has a long history.A lot of relics of the New Stone Age have been excavated in different ounties,especially the discovery of the fossils of ancient Qingliu residentsin the Fox Cave which traces the mankind'shistory in Fujian from six or seven thousand years ago back to ten thousand years ago. Sanming's distinctive historical and geographical enviroment made it a transfer station during the Hakkas' migration from the north to the south.So it enjoys the reputation of "Cradle of the Hakkas." Many famous people in history were born here,such as Yangshi, Luocongyan, Zhuxi, three of the four great Neo-confucianists in Song Dynasty; Huangshen,one of the eight great painters in Yangzhou,Jiansu Province; Yibinshou, one of the four great calligraphers in Qing Dynasty. There are still many historic sites of complex buildings and stone carving complex of Ming Dynasty.
