THE COLLEGE

Anyang Normal University is about 100 years old and currently has about 26,000 students. Currently, the Foreign Language Department has almost 2,600 students most of whom major in English. The majority of students in the English Department intend to become English teachers themselves and are very friendly and eager to learn. They range in speaking and listening ability from pre-intermediate to intermediate with grammar and reading skills being somewhat higher. The classes for foreign teachers consist of: Oral English, British & American Literature, Composition, Society & Culture of English Speaking Countries and Extensive Reading (Reading Survey). Courses in teaching methodology, literary analysis, general linguistics, pragmatics and phonetics are also available from time to time.

As with most university teaching positions in China, the workload is reasonable at 16 hours/week. The salary is modest by western standards but quite hefty by local standards. Foreign teachers make about 3 times the amount of their Chinese counterparts which allows for a quite comfortable lifestyle. The current salary for Ph.D holders is 3500 Yuan per month which is about US$420. The current salary for non-Ph.D holders is 3000 Yuan which is about US$360. The monthly cost of living for local people is about US$50 per month. In addition to salary, the college also provides roundtrip airfare (reimbursed), furnished private apartment free of charge on campus, free airport pickup in Beijing, a 2200 Yuan vacation travel allowance and a number of other amenities. The furnished housing includes: one bedroom; a sitting room; a kitchen with all cooking facilities; a bathroom with shower; heating and air-conditioning, a TV set, a DVD player and a telephone.

THE CITY

Anyang is a city of just over 500,000 people located in the northern part of Henan province. It is about a 5 hour drive south from Beijing. It is more than 3500 years old and was the first of seven ancient Chinese capitals. There are a number of quite interesting cultural sites nearby including the Shaolin Temple (Kung Fu), You Li Cheng (I Ching) and the Yin Ruins (Oracle Bone site which contains the earliest remnants of Chinese writing). Other famous sites at Xian (Terracotta warriors), Kaifeng and Luoyang are also within easy reach. Besides the past, Anyang is also making strides towards modernization especially in the downtown area which has many nice shops and restaurants. Everything you need for daily living and a number of "luxury" items are readily available. Food is quite cheap and delicious if you have a taste for Asian food at all.
