A Brief Introduction to Anyang Teachers College

Anyang Teachers College is an ordinary full-time teacher-training-oriented undergraduate institution of higher learning with a history of about 100 years.

The college now covers an area of 1,074,000 square metres(1611 mu) , and its floorage is 467,500 square metres. The college consists of three campuses in the same city — Huanghe Avenue Campus, Wenming Avenue Campus and Zhonghua Road Campus. Huanghe Avenue Campus, the main campus, is mainly used for the teaching , learning and living of students of 4-year and 3-year programs; Wenming Avenue Campus is the campus of an independent college ---- the Humanities and Management School; Zhonghua Road Campus is the campus of Continuing Education School.

The construction of Huanghe Avenue Campus started in March, 2002. It covers an area of 870,000 square metres (1305 mu). Now a floorage of 220,000 square metres has been completed, and another floorage of 108,000 square metres is under construction, including a floorage of 50,000 square metres of Yifu Document And Data Centre, Music Building and Concert Hall.

The college has 910,000 books of various kinds, 74 laboratories, 33 multi-medium classrooms and many more modern and network-connected computer rooms, language labs, etc. The value of precious teaching apparatuses and experimental apparatuses has amounted to over 49 million yuan.

The college comprises 16 departments, 3 teaching departments, 1 continuing college and an independent college ---- Humanities and Management College of Anyang Teachers College. The college is composed of 55 undergraduate and junior majors, of which 28 are undergraduate majors. There’re 16,000 students of ordinary full-time system and more than 10,000 students of adult education learning in the college. Now a new pattern of school running has basically been formed in the college, which is characterized by the fact that it is teacher-training-oriented and with the development of non teacher-training education and higher vocational technology education in concert and harmony, that it has a relatively complete range of subject areas and that both pre-job training and post-job training are well joined.

The college possesses 1,428 staff workers, including 843 full-time teachers, of whom 40 are professors, 230 are associate professors, 16 have doctor’s degree and 124 have master’s degree. Besides, there’re over 10 foreign experts working in the college every year. In recent years, 33 teachers of the college have been appraised and chosen as national and provincial excellent teachers, model teachers, key members of the teaching staff, and 14 teachers have been awarded Zeng Xianzi Prize for teachers in nation-wide teacher-training institutions of higher education.

The college has always regarded the quality of the cultivation of new talents as the lifeline of the college development, taken teaching as its continuous basic work to be completed, and put these as the guiding principle and goal for all our work. Through the long-standing efforts from the whole staff and students, a new school spirit, characterized by “being hard-working, polite, disciplined, pragmatic, united, creative and revering education”, has been formed. For many years, the students who have graduated from the college have been well-judged by the society for their fine moral and political attributes, sound theoretical foundation, and meticulous and precise style of work. They have contributed a lot to the country’s construction of modernization as well as the development of local economy, and, therefore, won a lot of honors for their college. Since 1991, 130 person-times of the college have received awards of provincial level and above. In this year, the employment rate of the first graduates (of 4-year programme) of our college has reached 93%. 117 of them have been enrolled by other universities to read for master’s degree. This number constitutes about 15% of the total graduates in this year.

Our college also pays much attention to research work. 17 research institutes have been established, including Dong Zuobin Oracle-bone Inscriptions Research Centre and Yin-shang Culture Research Institute, etc. Yindu Journal, Journal of Anyang Teachers College and Anyang Teachers College News are published regularly. Among them, Yindu Journal is the journal of Yin-shang Culture Association of China, the core journal among the 100 Chinese human and social sciences journals and is 4 times judged as one of the first-class periodicals of Henan Province. It is issued and distributed to about 20 countries, such as Britain, USA, France, Germany, Japan, etc, and thus cherishes a big influence in the academic circle of our country and abroad. In the recent five years, the teachers of the college have taken charge of and completed over 10 nation-level researches, published 142 works of researches, translation and textbooks, 83 reference books and dictionaries, 2,462 articles( many of which are enrolled in SCI and EI), 32 scientific research awards at provincial level and national level, and 78 scientific research awards of municipal governments. The college is noted for its Yin-shang culture research, ancient books collation and research, and mechanical and electrical integration research, which cherish afame in the academic circle of our country.

Our college has undertaken international academic exchanges and has established mutual contacts and friendly cooperative relationships with more than ten universities inside the country and abroad. Over 50 noted scholars in the countries and abroad have been engaged as our honorary professors or part-time professors. Foreign teachers and experts from Hongkong and countries such as Britain, USA, Russia, Belgium, New Zealand, etc, often work in our college every year.

In recent years, the college has gained many glorious titles, e.g., “Civilized Unit at Provincial Level”, “Civilized School at Provincial Level”, “Advanced Collective in Education Quality Year Activities”, “Advanced Party committee of Ordinary Higher Institution of Henan Province”, “Five-excellency Party Organization of Higher Institution of Henan Province”, “Advanced Unit of Student Management”, etc.

In September, 2004, the college drew up a strategic development plan and determined its two-step development strategy. Step One ( 2005 – 2010 ), we will speed up the adjustment of its subject and major structure, strengthen the construction of our traditionally essential subjects as in sciences and arts, expand subjects in engineering and develop new subjects and intersecting subjects. With undergraduate education as our main task, we’ll make efforts to develop graduate education. By the year 2010, undergraduate majors will reach 48, and the number of full-time students in the college will amount to 20,000. Step Two ( 2011—2020 ), we’ll continuously improve the subject system in accord with a multi-subject college, and cultivate and introduce a few celebrated scholars, actively develop graduate education with undergraduate education as our main task and speed up the step of international cooperative education. By the year 2020, the number of undergraduate majors will reach 60, the number of subjects with graduate education will be up to 30, andthe number of full time students will amount to 25,000. Through unremitting efforts, the college will be built into a multi-subject teaching and research college with a relatively high prestige within and outside our province.

At present, our college is willing to cooperate in education with world-famous universities in order to introduce advanced educational resources, to speed up our two-step development strategy, and try our best to build it into an important base of teacher training, scientific innovation, information service and decision-making service.
