Shangqiu Normal University is situated in the famous cultural city--Shangqiu , the juncture area of the four provinces of Henan, Shangdong, Jiangsu and Anhui , and the junction of Longhai Railway and Beijing-Jiulong Railway. Shangqiu Normal University is a provincial undergraduate (four-year) university. The university has an area of 2000 mu (13,300 ares), and a floorage of 430,000 square meters. At present, there are more than 16000 full-time students and 7000 adult-education students of various kinds, and 750 full-time teachers, among whom, 38 are professors, 231associate professors, 25with doctor degree, 182 with master degree.

The university has 14 departments, namely, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, History Department, Politics Department, Department of Foreign Languages, Mathematics Department, Department of Computer Science, Physics Department, Chemistry Department, Biology Department, Physical Education Department, Music Department, ArtDepartment, Education Department, Law Department. In addition to those, there are Maxism-Leninism and Ethics Teaching Office, Basic Courses Teaching Office, and Adult-Education Institute. The university has 31 undergraduate majors and 18 three-year majors, covering six first-level branches of learning-literature, science, engineering, economy, history, and education.

The library of the university has a collection of 1,200,000 copies of various kinds of books and more than 4000 kinds of journals published in China and other countries. The process of purchasing and cataloguing, circulation, inquiry, and retrieving is managed with the aid of computers. In the university, there are 56 different kinds of laboratories with advanced instruments and equipment. Besides, there are multi-media classrooms, studios, sound-labs, audio-visual classrooms, electronic reading-rooms. The computer-aided-management system of the library and the computer network of the university have been set up. The total value of the equipment and instruments is over 42 million RMB。
Currently, there are about 2000 students in the Foreign Languages Department, most of whom major in English. After graduation, most of them will be English teachers. The students in the Foreign languages Department are friendly and industrious, and eager to learn English well.

Courses and Workload for Foreign Teachers:

The courses for the foreign teachers to teach are Oral English, English Writing, Society and Culture of English -Speaking countries, British & American Literature. Now there are four vacancies for teachers from USA, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand with a bachelor degree or above. The contract time is for two semesters and the workload will be 16 periods each week (50 minutes per period).
