Introduction

 

Two universities merged to form China Three Gorges University (CTGU ) in 2000 inYichang, Hubei Province. Among its colleges, the history of the Normal College can be traced back to 1946. Yichang is a city of 4 million population, located in the East mouth of the Three Gorges. It is well known for hydroelectricity, the Three Gorges Project, and also for its tourism attractions. CTGU is a comprehensive university, which teaches a wide range of disciplines, enrolls students from all over the country as well as international abroad students, and puts lots of efforts to improve and develop the hydroelectric field of study.

CTGU has 10 Ministerial / Provincial Key Laboratories & Research Bases such as:

In addition, the university owns 49 research institutes such as:

  • Development and Research on Natural herbs of the Three Gorges area.

The university takes advantage of the location and endeavors to serve the hydroelectric industry, local economic and social development by implementing the principle of combining production, study and research. In recent 3 years, the university has undertaken and completed 1075 research items at all kinds of levels, and achieved a number of science and technology achievements, which reach the international level and first-class national level, especially in the construction a lot to the Three Gorges Project and the development of Qingjiang river.

CTGU has already established cooperative relationships with 45 universities in the foreign countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, the United Kingdom, and so on. The cooperations extend to teaching, scientific research and student exchanges. So far, the cooperations have greatly improved scientific research and talent cultivation.

CTGU puts stress on the development of the key disciplines and key laboratories, improves its organizational structure, and eventually forms five subject groups including hydroelectric energy engineering, hazard protection and environment, information technology and control engineering, the Three Gorges culture and tourism, and life science and biological technology. Now the university endeavors to develop the education of postgraduates and to improve the level of teaching, scientific research, and administration.

By 2010, CTGU will recruit over 30,000 full-time undergraduates, postgraduate and foreign students, and institute a group of key subjects (key laboratories) at the provincial and state level, and doctoral and master programs. We firmly believe that in the near future,CTGUwill be built into a new university town, full of the flavor of a new century, with the distinctive features of hydroelectric engineering and the Three Gorges culture, first-class architecture and facilities, and an excellent environment.

Location

CTGU is located in Yichang, Hubei province. Yichang is a 8,000-year-old city on Yangtze River, at the entrance of Xilin Gorge (east mouth of the Three Gorges). This area is also famous for its wonderful landscapes:

  • the Three Gorges,
  • Shen Nongjia,
  • QingjiangRiver,
  • Qu Yuan,
  • Wang Zhaojun's hometown,
  • the ancient battlefields of the Three Kingdoms,...

It is also renowned for the hydroelectric projects that have been realized here:

  • the Three Gorges Dam Project (Sanxia Daba) is the world greatest hydroelectric dam. It spans Yangtze River at Sandouping, Yichang. The construction began in 1994 and the reservoir began filling in June 2003. It aims at regulating the water flow, easing navigation on Yangtze, and generating power.
  • the Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project
  • the Geheyan Hydropower Plant

Tourism:

The university is near to the world famous Yangtze Three Gorges scenic zone, which covers abundant natural scenery as well as the culture and civilization of CHU, which were prosperous during the Warring States Period, l700 years ago. The foreign students may spend their vacations traveling across China by boat, train, bus or airplane from Yichang. More specific information may be obtained form the Department of International Relations.

Climatic Features:

in subtropical humid monsoonal climate zone, four seasons clearly demarcated; unstable cloudy and sunny periods in springs; with humid and hot summers; fine autumns; dry cold winters; with frost free period of 220- 300 days.

BELOW IS A LIST OF THE OFFERS AND CONDITIONS RELEVANT TO THE JOB TEACHING ENGLISH/French, AND YOUR STAY IN YICHANG:
1. Reimbursement of round trip airfare for 2-semester contract (international economy class air ticket for the nearest distance between China and your country and domestic economy class air ticket for the nearest distance between the entry port to Yichang City). One way air fare for a one-semester contract.
2. Provision of fully furnished accommodation, with at least 1 bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom.
3. Fixed monthly payment.
4. Work permit for China
5. Travel allowance (2200RMB) and one month salary for holiday pay for 2-semester contract (1100RMB only for one-semester contract).
6. Health/Medical Insurance or 347 Yuan RMB as reimbursement.
7. Free Chinese Lessons (4 hours/week)

ACCOMMODATION
During your entire contractual period in Yichang you shall be provided, free of charge, a full furnished flat which includes at least two bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom, toilet. Your flat is furnished with the following:

WHAT DATE SHOULD I ARRIVE IN CHINA?
We recommend that you arrive around 7 days before you are required to commence teaching. This will allow you to get to Yichang, and settle into your new home.
WHAT AM I REQUIRED TO TEACH?
You are mainly required to teach intensive reading, extensive reading, listening, speaking, some written English, literature or linguistics. Classes are generally two, fifty minute periods per class. You will work 16 hours per week. If you can teach more hours, we also offer you some extra money. Before coming, you’d better tell us what you can teach.
WHAT TEACHING MATERIALS WILL I USE?
Each class has a set textbook which will be helpful for providing you with an outline for your class. You shall have full access to all the teaching resources at our University. If you have any materials that you think may be of assistance for teaching or understanding culture, please bring them and share with your students.
HOW LONG ARE THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS?
The same as our Chinese university teachers.
BY WHAT CURRENCY WILL I BE PAID?
You will be paid in the Chinese currency RMB.
