Introduction

Wuhan Institute of Technology (hereafter simply referred to as WIT) was established in 1973 by the former Electronic Industry Ministry of China. WIT has a history of 30 year up to now. In the March of 1999, the school merged with other schools and was renamed as Wuhan Institute of Technology with the approval of the Chinese Education Ministry.

WIT has seven schools, they are, Telecommunication & Information Technology school, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering School, Computer Technology and Software Application School, Foreign Language School, Business School, Fashion Design and Fine Art School, International School; Five departments, that are, Civil Construction Engineering Department, Human Studies & Social Science Department, Biology Engineering Department, Tourism and Planning Department, Art Design Department. WIT has Social Occupation and Vocational Education Research Institute and Mechanical and Electrical Applied Technology Research Institute.

The total value of laboratory and training equipment is 56.50 millions RMB. WIT has more than 32 training centers for different purposes, that are, CAD, Computer simulation, numerical control, information technology, modern model technology, mechanical CAD/CAM, 83 well equipped laboratories, more than 9500 sets teaching and training instruments and equipment, more than 2８00 computers. The number of staff of the institute is 1142, of which 889 are teachers. The number of staff with the rank of associate professor or above are more 190. This year above 16,000 full time students are enrolled.

The area of its campus is 1210 mu (equivalent to 80 hectares), of which the under cover area is approximately 380,000 square meters. WIT has more than 30 training centers for different purposes, that are, CAD, Computer simulation, numerical control, information technology, modern model technology, mechanical CAD/CAM, 60 well equipped laboratories, more than 5000 sets teaching and training instruments and equipment, more than 2000 computers. The number of staff of the institute is approximate 900, of which 590 are teachers. The number of staff with the rank of associate professor or above are more than 130. There are approximate 13000 full time students studying in the institute.

The Social occupation & Vocational Education Research Institute has undertaken and completed approximate 10 national vocational and technical education research projects. Hua Tai Mechanical and Electronic Technology Research Institute has developed a couple of new applicable products such as electric power consumption limiting device, frequency modulation education wireless station.

WIT is located in the core zone of China IT Center in Wuhan, enjoying convenient transportation and fantastic environment.

Construction and Development of the Departments

In order to adapt itself to the development of the socialist market economy, Wuhan Institute of Technology (hereafter simply referred to as WIC) has gradually established a new-type talent educating and training pattern. The Institute puts great emphasis on developing students’ comprehensive capabilities, and actively promotes the reformation of discipline structure, course system, teaching content and teaching methodology. In addition to these, the institute also lays great stress on developing students in terms of independence and innovation as well as their capacities of application and practice. In this way, the graduates from WIT become talents with comprehensive capabilities step by step.

Brief Introduction to the departments:

Mechanical and Electrical EngineeringSchool

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was founded in 1973.It has been one of the key departments of our institute for 30 years. At present there are 1,500 students in this department, and 28 out of 40 teachers are professors or associate professors.

This department offers six disciplines: Mechanical Design andManufacturing and Their Automation, Mechatronics, Numerical ControlTechnology and its Application, Electrical Engineering and Automation,Computer Aided Mechanical Design, Die Mold Design & Manufacturing.

It has advanced teaching installations and facilities forexperimentation and practice. There are also 25 specialized labs and12 technical centers, including Mechanical CAD/CAM Technical Center,MechanicalDesignCenter, MechanicalManufacturingTechnicalCenter, MechanicalMeasurementTechnicalCenter, Auto-controlTechnicalCenter, Die & MoldDesignTechnicalCenter, and CNCTechnicalCenter.

In this department, the teachers have compiled lots of teaching materials and over twenty textbooks have been published.

The teachers of the department have published more than twenty theses in the periodicals at different levels in our country.

Computer Technology and SoftwareApplicationSchool

The Department of Computer Science now has over 1800 students. In it 11 out of 49 teachers are professors and associate professors, It has three diploma programs: Computer Applications & Maintenance, Computer Network & Multimedia Technology, Computer Software and Information Management. And it includes Video Frequency Technology, Computer Maintenance, Network Management, Web site Construction, Multimedia Design, Network Security, Software Development andInformationManagement.

The department possesses HardwareExperimental & TrainingCenter, SoftwareDevelopmentCenter, NetworkTechnologyCenter,and Computer Aided instructing Center. It has set up a number of basesin enterprises for student to practice, such as ShenZhen Hua Wei Group, TCL Network Company and Wuhan Tu Lin Science & Technology Development L.T,D.

The teachers of the department have compiled some teachingmaterials, over 20 of which have beenpublished. This departmenthas a National Computer High-tech Testing Station.And it is also oneof the National Computer Grade Testing Stations authorized by ATA in the U.S. andby the Education Ministry of China.

Telecommunication & Information Technology school

In the Department of Electronic and telecom engineering there are nearly 3000 students and 90 teachers, 23 of whom are professors or associate professors. And the department has specially engaged three nationally well-known professors.

It has established three specialities of Electronic Information Technology, Telecommunication Technology and Photoelectron Technology, including 12 disciplines which overlap the latest application domain in electronic information technology and telecommunication technology. This department possesses a basic electronic experimental center and a base of nearly 2,000m2 for practice and training.

It attaches great importance to application research and the development of new products. The faculty pays great attention to international exchanges. It has established regular academic relationship with colleges in Singapore, Belgium, Denmark and so on. Nowadays, there have been nearly 10,000 graduates from this faculty, which has made great contributions to the construction of our country.

The teachers of this school have compiled about 10 textbooks in the new century. In total, 30 theses written by the teachers have been published. And the faculty are studying and developing 12 scientific research items, of which “Water Quality Testing & Analyzing Device” is a popular science program at national level.

Department of Civil Construction Engineering

The Department of civil Construction Engineering offers fivedisciplines：Construction Engineering and Computer-aided-design, Architectural Ornament and Construction, Construction Payment Administration, Construction Supervising and Building Serving Administration. The department has more than 500 students and 25 teachers.

This department has established close relationship with the civil Construction and inner Decoration Engineering Companies in China.There the department has set up some long-term practice bases with the companies. Also it possesses 7 practice shops and labs. In 1998, this department was authorized a Construction Professional Qualification Training Setup By the Labor Department of Hubei Provice.

Foreign LanguagesSchool

The Department of Foreign Languages at present has 530 students and 80 teachers, of whom 8 are foreign teachers. It offers three majors of Tourism English, Practical English and Business English. This department possesses a language-training center with 9 listening labs with 370 seats, an English broadcast station.

The Department of Foreign Languages adopts the most advancedteaching methods and pays great attention to the training ofstudents’ability of applying languages and other related practical capacities.

The department has established regular relationship with someenterprises and companies. It has set up quite a few practice andtraining bases, such as Wuhan Hua Chang Travel Company, Wuhan MaiChi Science & Technology Company, WuhanWhiteRoseHotel,Hu BinGarden Hotel, Wuhan Min Hang Hotel and Wuhan Shangrila Hotel.

BusinessSchool

The Department of Business Administration has 1,600 students at present. There are 40 teachers, of whom 14 are professors or associate professors. It provides the disciplines of Business and Industry Administration, Account of Electronic Data processing, E-Commerce and Marketing. With the well-equipped E-commerce center, Accounting Practice Lab and Multimedia Room, as well as up-to-date soft wares, the faculties of the Department of Business Administration have made achievements in the fields of both teaching and academic research.

This department has carried out the policy of students’ obtaining both the diploma and professional certification. By this means the graduates can get graduation certificate as well as other professional skill grade certification. In addition, this department is active in cooperating with many enterprises and organizations in order to develop students’ capabilities of applying theories and knowledge.Apart from the cooperation, it is developing a number of scientific research items.

Fashion Design and FineArtsSchool

The Department of Garment Design and Engineering provides the majors of Costume Designing and Image Art Designing It owns 10 labs, 2 specialized computer rooms and 4 specialized studios. At present there is a teaching staff of high quality, in which there are professors, vice-professors, an advanced fashion stylist and an advanced technologist. Most of them are well-experienced in both teaching and practice.So they have powerful capacities of education, research and production.In the design competitions at home and abroad, the teachers have obtained large quantities of prizes, including two gold medals, a silver medal, three bronze at national level, ones and many other prizes. This department has adopted the unique teaching method of costume designing unitization, and set up lots of practice and training bases.

Department of Textile Engineering

The Department of Textile Engineering offers two specialties of Modern Textile Technology and Dyeing and Finishing Technology. It possesses numbers of labs, such as textile material lab, cotton spinning lab, woven sample room, textile CAD center, organic chemistry lab, dyeing and finishing labs and so on. There have been a good number of practice and training bases.

Now this department has 13 teachers, of whom 9 are professors and associate professors. Most of them are expert at both teaching and practice. They do well in education, scientific research and production. Some of them are members of the national textile organizations. More than 40 theses or textbooks have been published.Indeed this is a teaching staff with great capabilities.

Fine Art and Design Department

The Fine Art Design Department now has 450 full-time students, 26 full time teachers and 5 professors specially employed. The students can specialize in environment art, computer aid art design, industry design and photograph engineering. The department has an industry design training center, a computertraining center, a multi-media teaching center, a ceramic art shop and a photographic studio and a dark room. The department has set the teaching and practicing base in Shenzhen and Hubei Companies of culture and poke scenery art design. A number of academic thesis and works from the teachers of this department have been published the famous academic periodicals both home and abroad, some of the thesis and works have won prizes in the contests both home and abroad.

Department of Biotechnical Engineering

The Microbial Technology program

Key courses: biology conspectus, biological chemistry, cell biology, microbiology, genetics, enzymology and zymogenic engineering, mircrobial fermentation technology, protein engineering, downstream technology of biotechnical engineering, comprehensive experimentation of biotechnical engineering, biological instrumental analysis, etc.

Employment possibilities: Graduates of this program can undertake the tasks to exploit and produce different kinds of food, hygienical food, brew and biological preparation, and can do the research work in the application of manufacturing technologies in the enterprises engaged in environment protection industry, light industry, fermentation industry and gene engineering downstream technology industry.

The Biotechnical Pharmacy program

Key courses: inorganic and analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, biology conspectus, biological chemistry, cell biology, microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, downstream technology of biotechnical engineering, comprehensive experimentation of biotechnical engineering, biological instrumental analysis, etc.

Employment possibilities: Graduates of this program can undertake the forefront tasks to design and administer the production and direct the production technically. They are able to exploit products, design devices, identify new medicines and reagents and develop technologies. They can also be engaged in marketing technically.

Human Studies & Social Science Department

There are four lines of specialization: secretary and office automation, bilingual secretary (Chinese and English Language), judicial & economic secretary. The department has employed a professor and six associate professors. The teachers of this department have undertaken the work of compiling “Applied Writing”, “College Chinese Language” as national higher vocational education textbooks and undertaken several provincial level research projects.

Tourism and Hospitality Department

There are four lines of specialization:

Hotel management, tourism English, tourism Japanese and tourism planning. This department emphasize high level training. The department has set training bases with the enterprises in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hainan, Wuhan and Japan. The tourist guidesimulation training room, cafeteria, canteen (in both Chinese and western style), hotel room, shaping room, audio training room will be put into operation soon.

InternationalSchool

The international school has established relationship with education institutions, societies and famous enterprises, cooperating with them in teachers exchange, student exchange, teaching and management. The students in WIT can go abroad to continue their study. InternationalSchool has employed early or late 30 teachers from the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan. Each year, 12 foreign teachers on average work for InternationalSchool. InternationalSchool combines language training and study abroad program, having clear aim and distinct features and gain obvious effectiveness.

International school performs English, French and Japanese language training, and cooperates with higher education institutions in Finland, Denmark, Singapore and France. Each year, international school recommends qualified students to these institutions to continue their study. The students can receive the education grant from the government of these countries.

Further Education Department

Further Education Department was established in 1989. Further Education Department is responsible to organize and supervise teacher training, adult education, vocational skill training and professional qualification test. Further Education Department can arrange training, accommodation, board for 60 students. Further Education Department has been equipped with CAD/CAM training room for training teachers.
