There are three points of land where the Han and Yangtze Rivers meet.
It wasn't until 1957 that these three points were joined to form Wuhan.
This city has always been the Yangtze's major inland port and offers
visitors a wealth of history, culture and striking scenery. Major
attractions include Hankou which is a former Treaty Port, and it was home
to thousands of overseas merchants and officials during the early part of
the century. One of the most important Buddhist sites in central China is
the Guiyuan Buddhist Temple in Hanyang. A spectacular showplace for
Buddhist art, the many halls house a 105-ton white stone Buddha from Burma
and some 500 other statues. The Hubei Provincial Museum, located near East
Lake, is one of the largest and most comprehensive museums in central
China. Particularly noteworthy is a magnificent set of musical bells
unearthed from Han Dynasty tombs. Jinzhou is an ancient city 235 km
upriver from Wuhan and for relic-lovers is well worth visiting. Legend
says the Lute Pavilion in Hanyang inspired a great composer more than a
thousand years ago. This beautifully restored site consists of pavilions
and terraces amid spacious gardens on the shore of Moon Lake. Wuhan
cuisine is influenced by a major-scale inland fishery which offers the
best-known fare and agriculture in the region. Wuhan steamed dumplings are
justly famous, steamed wild goose is a well-known local treat and the fish
is so good that Mao Zedong wrote a poem about it. Wuhan's retail
shopping is diverse including paintings, bambooware, paper-cuttings and
wood and stone carvings. Prime shopping areas are near Hankou railway
station and along Zhongjiacun in Hanyang. Primarily an industrial
city, Wuhan is a major centre of China's iron and steel production. It is
also the site of a three million metric ton steel rolling mill and China's
largest heavy machine tool plant.
