Xiaogan gets its name from a moving legend which goes that in the East
Han Dynasty, a pious but poor young man named Dong Yong was obliged to
sell himself in order to bury his dead father, and his deed moved the
heaven.
Xiaogan is situated in the northeast Hubei Province, to the east is
"the thoroughfare of nine provinces"--Whuhan City, and the south--gate of
He'nan Province--Xinyang City to the north, and to the west, ancient city
--Xiangfan, Jinzhou, and motor-city--Shiyan.
Xiaogan, a newly-founded developing medium-sized city, now governs four
county-level cities (Hanchuan, Yingcheng, Anlu and Guangshui), three
counties (Yunmeng, Dawu and Xiaochang) and Xiaonan District. It covers an
area of 11,600 sq. meters and has a population of 5.80 million, among
which, the urban amount reaches 0.3 million.
Xiaogan has perfect foundations for economy development, such as the
building-up of production bases of farm products with "high quality, large
quantity and high efficiency", mass industry production leading with
automobile, optics, electronics, new-type building materials, salt and
phosphate chemical industries; flouring achievements of science and
technology and education; complete facilities for culture and sports,
sound organization for medical and health care; complete function for
dining and entertainment. The market system and social welfare system have
been preliminarily built to fit market-oriented economy. With good
investment environment and favorable geographic position, Xiaogan has
attracted 260 foreign-invested enterprises by means of sino-foreign joint
venture, joint cooperation, and solely foreign venture, which have
accelerated Xiaogan's economic development.
