Nanhua University is a comprehensive university under the joint administration of Commission of Science, Technology, Industry for National Defense and the Government of Hunan Province. Approved by the Ministry of Education of China in 2000, Nanhua University was established on the basis of the amalgamation of its two predecessors: the Central South Institute of Technology and Hengyang Medical College both founded in the late 1950's.

The university is situated in Hengyang City, a time-honored cultural city, with Mt. Hengshan (renowned for its natural beauty, temperate climate and Buddhist significance in China) to the north and Xiangjiang River to the east. The main campus occupies a picturesque 1,200,000 sq.m. site in the downtown, making it convenient to reach by public transit. Here the colleges and academic buildings are on a level site within walking distance of each other.

Currently, the total number of students registered at Nanhua University is over 25,000. The university consists of 18 colleges/schools, with 41 specialties and 19 research institutes, covering 8 branches of learning, namely science, engineering, medicine, law, liberal arts, economics, management, and education. It is authorized to confer the academic degrees of Bachelor, Master and Ph.D candidates, as well as diplomas. Its publications include Journal of Nanhua University with three editions (engineering, medicine and social sciences), Chinese Journal of Arteriosclerosis, and American Journal of Chinese Clinical Medicine entrusted by American Association of Chinese Medicine.
The university libraries have a collection of 1,680,000 volumes, in which information digitalization and automatic management are well applied. The university has 8 affiliated hospitals with 6,000 patient beds, providing its medical students a good place for clinical practice, and overall medical services for the local residents.

Programs for international students

International stuents have the following options in Nanhua University

1.Visiting student status (non-degree granting) for one or two years

2.Short-term Chinese studies programs Visiting Student

3.Application prerequisites: a personal resume, highest degree certificate, official academic transcripts, certificate of Chinese Proficiency level, a photocopy of passport. To ensure the quality of teaching, Chinese proficiency examination for visiting stuent will be held after enrollment . Having passes the examination, the student can begin his/her specialized studying. If not,he/she should make up Chinese studying, and then pass the examination organized by Nanhua University.

1.EntranceRequirements

• For short- term students: open admission. For the cultural exchange groups, 8 students or more are required in each group and the matters concerned could be negotiated by the two parties.
• The student who is ready to study in General Chinese Language Class should have a senior high school diploma, aged 15 to 60.
• The student who would like to do a university course for a first degree in our college should be a senior high school graduate in his home country ,aged 18 to 30

2.Program Categories
(1).Short-time Chinese Language Class: specially designed for the overseas students who would like to study Chinese in China for a short time.There will be 2 terms each year, 20 weeks/term,30 classes/week.

After 20 weeks’ study ,the students will be able to master more than 1000 Chinese characters to meet their needs in the daily lives.

The Courses are mainly related with intensive training on Basic Chinese Language ,Phonetic Discrimination,Listening and Speaking. We also give special lectures on traditional Chinese culture such as Qigong and Taijiquan, Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, Appreciation of Chinese Folk Music , Appreciation of Film and TV Video,etc.

(2). General Chinese Language Class :

The class can provide more opportunities to learn the basic theory of Chinese language and grasp the practical skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.After one or two years study, the students will be equiped with abilities for general use.

Compulsory Courses : Elementary and Intermediate Chinese, Spoken Chinese, Listening and Speaking, Basic Journalistic Reading, Chinese Culture, etc.

Optional Courses : Basic Writing, Chinese-Foreign Language Translation, Chinese Songs, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, Taijiquan, etc.

Special Lectures on Chinese Culture : Traditional Chinese Customs, Chinese Tea Culture and Dietetic Culture, Chinese Opra, Folk Music, Appreciation of Cultural Relics, Traditional Chinese Medical Science and Medicines, Chinese Aesthetics, Education in China, China’s Politics and Law, etc.

Examinations : given in the middle of and at the end of each term in written or oral form, preparing the students for HSK.

Field Trips : one or two field trips for language practice are provided in each term.

(3). Courses of Chinese Language and Culture for undergraduates :

The courses are specially designed for overseas students who would like to get a first degree in Chinese language and culture . After 4-5 years’ study, the students who have acquired a total of 168 credit points and passed Band 6 (included) and above of HSK can graduate ahead of time and obtain a certificate.

Compulsory Courses : Elementary Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, Advanced Chinese, Listening and Speaking, Reading,Writing, Chinese History, Chinese National Conditions, Chinese Folk Customs, Tourism, Geography, Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern Chinese Literature, Basic Knowledge of Computer, Ancient Chinese Language, Foreign Literature, A Brief Introduction to Chinese Culture, Western Culture , Sinology Abroad, A Brief Introduction to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Instruction in Graduate Dissertation, etc.

Optional Courses : Martial Arts, Calligraphy ,Appreciation of Chinese Folk Music, etc.
