Introduction

Hunan First Normal College has a long and splendid history, and always been enjoying a good reputation of “academy of thousand years and normal school of centuries”. Its glorious revolutionary and educational traditions attract the public’s admiration and attention.

The history of the college can be traced back more than one thousand years to the Chengnan Academy, founded in South Song Dynasty. In 1903, the system of the Chengnan Academy was changed and renamed as Hunan Teacher’s School. In 1912, it was denominated to be Hunan Public First Teacher’s School. It had been named as Hunan First Teacher’s School since the foundation of PRC before it was upgraded to be a common normal college and gained a name of Hunan First Normal College in March of 2000.

Hunan First Normal College is the place in which the founder of PRC, Mao Zetung and several patriots Cai Hesen, He Shuheng, Ren Bishi, Li Weihan, Xiao San, Zhang Guoji and Chen Tianhua etc. studied in the early years, and also the school in which some famous scholars and educators such as Zhu Xi, Zhang shi, Zhang Taiyan, Xu Teli, Li Da etc. worked for teaching. The generational giant Mao Zetung had studied and worked here for 8 years, and took a great deal of revolutionary activities for the establishment of Chinese Party and New China.

In December of 1950, Chairman Mao inscribed the name of First Normal School for this college.

In 1993, Jiang Zeming inscribed the name of “Youth Mao Zetung” for the copper figurine of Mao Zetung on the campus. The college, with a long history and natural scenery, have been visited by many leaders from the Party and the state for many times, and also many heads of state from foreign countries have come here for visit.

In these years, the college has been making great progress and always appearing before the world with a fresh developing gesture. Now the college covers an area of 898666 m2 including newly levied land 726666m2. It uses advanced teaching instruments and devices with a total value of 23200 thousand yuan RMB, more than 1000 sets computers, more than 160 sets of pianos included. Its library has a collection of 400 thousand volumes.

Now the college has more than 425 staff members, more than 298 members of them are professional teachers, of whom more than 17 are full professors, 108 are associate professors, both constitute 36.2% of the total, and 31.9% of the total have master degree or above. The total number of the students has reached more than 15000, including about 9000 full-time students and more than 6000 students taking courses in degree or non-degree programs of adult education. The college is enlarging the size of enrolment now.

At present, the college offers 28 undergraduate and professional training programs, the fields of study cover 5 branches of learning: education, literature, science, engineering and management. The college has always laid emphasis on basic subjects, strict training and management, thus its graduates, showing their strong theoretic basis, self-thought abilities, professional skills and diligence, are warmly welcome by the employers.

There are students of this college rewarded golden plate or first and second prizes in the various competitions such as “College Student’s English Speech Competition”, “College Students Argument Competition”,“College Student’s Sports Meeting” and “Multi-media Education Software Design Competition”.

The college has been rewarded as an excellent unit in education, teaching and research by the nation and Hunan Province, and also rewarded as a garden unit by Hunan Province and Changsha City. It is one of the key preservative units with cultural relics and patriotic education bases in Hunan Province.
