Zhuzhou Institute of Technology was founded in 1978. It experienced Zhuzhou elementary college, Zhuzhou college and china packaging engineering institute, and was led by the china national packaging corporation in 1987. In 1989, with the approval of National Education Committee, the institute began to enroll four-year-study students. It has become a new system of being co-constructed by the Central Government and Hunan Province since the year of 2000, when the reform on higher education system has been adapted. The co-constructed party includes: Hunan Province, China National Packaging and China Packaging Technology Association.

Zhuzhou Institute of Technology is the only university that engaged in the higher education of packaging. National Supervision Committee for Teaching of Packaging Engineering in Institutions of higher learning, Packaging Education Committee of China Packaging Association, China Packaging Technology Training Center and China Packaging Design Technology Speciality Center are established in our institute. Therefore the institute is praised as "the intellectual cradle of China Packaging", and has great influence on packaging industry and education circles at home and abroad. Guangming Daily, China Education, China Higher Education(2001) introduced the characteristics and achievements of management in details.

The institute covers an area of 1200 acres, with the floor space totaling 310,000 square meters, excluding the extra planned area of 2000 acres. Currently the total value of fixed assets(excluding the ground) is RMB250 million yuan., and the teaching instruments and equipment value over 60 million yuan. It also boasts a collection of 4million books and 2 million electronic books.

The institute has become a comprehensive with various disciplines, including technology, arts, science, management, law etc. The institute boasts 14 colleges and departments and 25 graduate specialities. Among them, Art Design, Packaging Engineering, Printing Engineering, Mechanical Design and Automating, Automation, Advertising are state-governed ones.

The institute enrolls new students from all over the country, including 25 provinces, cities and autonomous regions. There are currently 7,200 full-time students. The employment rate for a graduate is over 95%, especially the supply and demand rate of those graduated from packaging design, packaging engineering, packaging printing speciality is beyond 1 to 5.

There are 523 full-time teachers, including 1 academicians, 78 are professors and 211 associate professors. There are 113 teachers with doctorate and post-doctorate degrees, 36 supervisors of doctor and postgraduate, 227 postgraduates. In addition, we have employed 3 part-time academicians and 60 part-time professors.
