Zhangjiajie municipality, located at 29N and 110E, is a booming tourist city in the northwest of Hunan Province. Formerly known as Dayong, the city got its new name in 1994 from the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The park , set up in 1982, is the first of its kind in China and far more popular than Dayong.
The Municipality has 15 million people and on area of 9563 meters, which is divided into Yongding, Wulingyuan districts and Cili, Sangzhi counties. The municipal government is located in Yongding District, some 390 kilometers from the provincial capital Changsha and 300 kilometers from the Three Gorges of Yangtze River.
In the 1950s, the local government established a forestry farm in Zhangjiajie. But only towards the end of 1970s,did the people outside first discover the unique beauty of the forest of steep peaks, which are made of quartzite sandstone.
The national forest park, along with the adjoining two nature reserves of Suoxi Valley and Tianzi Mountain, Makes up Wulingyuan, the central scenic part of Zhangjiajie Municipality. Wulingyuan is in the middle of the Wuling Mountain that runs across Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces in central and southwest China. Wulingyuan was possibly first mentioned by the renowned Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei(701-761), who in one poem suggested that as early as his days, Wulingyuan was already a paradisiac pastoral retreat.
In 1984 the wonderland of Zhangjiajie, Suoxiyu Valley and Tianzi Mountain, with an area of 369 square kilometers, was formally christened as Wulingyuan by Yaobang, then Party General Secretary. In 1988, Wulingyuan was designated by the State Council as a State-level scenic area of; four years later the World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO inscribled it on the World Heritage List , saying that "as a cultural and natural site of exceptional and universal value, Wulingyuan requires protection for the benefit of all humanity." The exceptional value of Wulingyuan lies in its lofty forests, crystal clear lakes , limpid streams and above all, its unique karst topography---the quarzite sandstone crags and canyons there are simply superb. Awed by its grotesque glamour, landscape connoisseurs from home and abroad all call Zhangjiajie the "Labrinth in Nature " and the "Monument of the Earth".
Besides Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie also boasts some 300 more scenic spots and places of historical interest. Among them are the Nature Reserve Badagongshan, the largest cave of Asia Jiutiandong, Marshal He Long s homevillage Hongjiaguan, the Taoist mecca Wulei Mountain and the Maoyan River where tourists can drift along downstream.

Located in the very heart of East China, Hefei has got fairly convenient transport system--a cobweb of air, railway and road transport facilities link the city with most other important destinations.
Airport

You can access the provincial capital daily from most of the major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Qingdao. In addition, you may opt to fly from Hefei to the Yellow Mountain. The Luogang Airport is located about 10km south of the city proper. CAAC buses (RMB5) take passengers to the CAAC office on Huizhou lu shortly after a plane arrives. Leaving Hefei for the airport, you may go to the CAAC office (daily 8am-10pm; Tel: 0551-2886626) to book the ticket. China Eastern Airlines office (Tel: 0551-2822537) at 246 Jinzhai lu can also arrange transportation.

Railway station

A more affordable and popular option is visiting or leaving the city by train, especially from cities in nearby provinces, such as Shanghai, Chengdu, Zhenzhou, Nanchang as well as destinations within Anhui, including Bengbu, Fuyang, Anqing and Wuhu. With the completion of the Nanjing-Xi'an Railway Line in the foreseeable future, Hefei will play an even more important role in railway transport, linking east and west China. The newly constructed railway station, lying 3km northeast of the center at the northeastern end of Shengli lu, is arguably one of the most modern in east China. Arriving by train, you may take bus No.119 into town. Although you can book tickets outside of the station, it is possible that you will not be able to get what you want. If you do have trouble, try the advance booking office at the intersection of Changjiang lu and Jinzhai lu, especially for sleeper tickets. CITS (Zhongguo guoji luxing she, Tel: 0551-2821418), at 8 Meishan lu, also provides similar services.

Bus station

As the capital city, Hefei is the center of provincial road transport. State-level Expressway No.312 (Shanghai to Xinjiang) and No.206 (Yantai to Shantou) meet at Hefei. And, with the recent completion of expressways between Hefei and Nanjing, Hefei and Wuhu, Hefei and Tongling as well as Hefei and Anqing, road transport between Hefei and other major and minor cities in the Yangtze River Delta has greatly improved. Especially noteworthy is the fact that it takes no more than two hours to get to Nanjing (RMB60) and five & a half hours to reach Shanghai (RMB130) by expressway. The Hefei long-distance bus station is located at the intersection of Shengli lu and Mingguang lu, not far from the railway station.

City transport

There are over 80 bus routes in the city, carrying locals and travelers to virtually every corner of town. The most frequently used buses are bus No.1 and No.10. The former goes from the railway station to the city center while the latter from the railway station to the hotel area. There are also hundreds of taxis in the city, and fares to most areas should not exceed RMB30.To the Yellow Mountain: The best way is to take train No.5049 departing at 12:55 and arriving at 20:58.To Jiuhuashan: The best way is to take a long-distance bus that goes via Tongling for around five hours
