Introduction

 


China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) is well-established as a national university. After more than ninety years of growth, it has fully developed in the fields of engineering, sciences, liberal arts and management. It was natural, given the nature of China coal mining industry, that the university should teach the major scientific and engineering disciplines in coal mining, which still take priority in China and has become famous abroad. It was one of the first China universities to establish a management department. The modern CUMT is equally known in resources and geology science, mechanics and liberal arts. It is designated as one of the 100 universities receiving special governmental subsidies. In February, 2000 the school was transferred under the administration of the Ministry of Education, becoming one of the state universities directly supervised by the Ministry of Education.

CUMT currently has 15 schools and departments with 46 undergraduate specialties, 48 graduate programs and 8 research stations for post-doctoral graduates. The total student body is 30,624 among whom 19,416 are undergraduate students, 2,208 graduate and doctorate students. More than 60,000 students have graduated from the school. CUMT has an experienced teaching staff with high academic level and many of them have made tremendous contributions and obtain wide influence. Among 3,845 faculty and staff members, 1245 are full-time teachers. There are 5 academicians of China Academy of Engineering, 95 doctorate graduate supervisors, over 700 full professors and associate professors.

CUMT is equipped with High-quality teaching and research facilities of 27 research institutes and 31 laboratories, some of which are listed as state-level or province-level key laboratories. Internet service is provided for all teachers and students. The CUMT library is furnished with an automated management system and has a holding of 117,600,000 volumes in total. Other facilities in the university include CUMT Press, Science Hall, Gymnasium, Teachers' Club, Students' Club and a number of other cultural and recreational facilities.

With the development of the university, CUMT has continually opened up new areas for international academic exchanges and cooperation, establishing co-operational and exchange agreements and relations with dozens of universities and research organizations from the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia and other countries.
Since 1990, the university has been awarded 18 prizes in terms of the three national prizes, namely the National Natural Science, the National Invention, and the National Science & Technology Prizes, thus ranking at the advanced level of the universities in China. Now the school has undertaken more than 500 scientific programs and projects at national, provincial and ministerial levels, demonstrating its strong academic and research power.


Contract Terms

ESL Position Description

China University of Mining and Technology

1. Position and Number

For 2003-2004 academic year, 7 ESL positions are available at China University of Mining and Technology, of which one is categorized as expert and the other six as teachers.

2. Requirements for experts

a. Ph. D degree in English language and literature with a minimum of two years of teaching experience, with the ability to teach core courses for junior and senior English majors as well as students toward Master’s degree in English language and literature. The core courses may include Selected Readings in British & American literature, Advanced Writing, Linguistics and so on.

b. Weekly load: 12-14 class hours;

c. Observe Chinese laws as well as regulations set by the inviting party;

d. Free from any unconcluded lawsuits back at home country;

e. Both the employee and the accompanying person should be in good health condition.

3. Requirements for teachers

Minimum BA degree in relevant fields of study, preferably with teaching experience. They should be able to speak their native language in standard pronunciation and intonation. Average workload: 16 class hours per week. Teaching duties may include: conversation, reading, writing and cultural survey of Great Britain and the U.S. Other requirements are equal to c.d.e. for experts.

4. Remuneration Package

a. Salary

Salaries vary greatly depending on the academic qualifications the employees. Currently three categories are available:

Cat. I: 2,800-3,300 yuan (RMB) (BA holders with two years of teaching experience or high school teachers with over three years of teaching experience)

Cat.II: 3,300-4,600 yuan (RMB) (university instructors, assistant professors or high school teachers with MA degree in relevant fields of study and over five years of teaching experience)

Cat. III: 4,600-6,000 yuan (RMB) (well-known university professors and associate professors)

b. Travel Allowance

2,200 yuan (RMB) per academic year

c. In accordance with the current regulations, 70% of the monthly salary can be converted into U.S. dollars.

d. The university covers medical costs for foreign faculty up to 1000 yuan (RMB) per academic year. Foreign faculty is therefore strongly advised to purchase health insurance to cover major illnesses before coming to China.

e. A furnished three-room apartment is to be provided for free in the apartment building for foreign faculty on the campus. Facilities such as PC with Internet access, AC, heating, phone, full bath, TV, refrigerator. are available. Electricity of 300 Kw·h per month will be provided free of charge.

f. Foreign faculty is supposed to cover meal expenses themselves. A separate kitchen is available in the apartment.

5. International Travel Costs

CUMT shall provide foreign faculty with a round trip international air ticket (economy class) to his/her home country on the condition that foreign faculty fulfills a one academic year teaching contract. The air-fare shall be reimbursed in RMB one month after arrival at CUMT. The return air ticket shall be left with CUMT until foreign faculty fulfills the teaching contract.
