Founded
in 1927, Jiangsu Provincial Yancheng Middle School is one of the first
key schools in Jiangsu Province. In the April of 1997, it was accepted
as a state-ranked model middle school after being jointly checked by
State Educational Commission and Jiangsu Provincial Educational Commission.
YMS has an area of 207 mu (15 hectares). The buildings of the school
cover a floor space more than 50,000 square meters. It is equipped with
complete facilities, such as multi-media classrooms, comprehensive science-technology
buildings, multi-function stadium, plastic running tracks (400 metres
) as well as a school net and a long- distance education net. The school
campus boasts both beautiful environment with water flowing under exquisite
bridges and beautiful pavilions standing on the small island in the
center of the lake.
So it enjoys a good name A Garden School. Currently, YMS has an excellent
staff of 280 , of whom 208 are professional teachers. One of them enjoys
the State Special Financial Aid. There are 8 teachers of a special classification,
85 senior staff and 80 middle rank. The principle of YMS, Wuhua Zhu,
is a famous education specialist in China. Mr Zhu is also one of the
representatives of the ninth National People's Congress. The student
body , totaling 7300-plus, consists of two major parts. Over 4200 students
study in 62 senior classes, of which 26 belong to Grade One, 20 Grade
Two and 16 Grade Three. The remaining 2000-plus study in Yancheng Junior
Middle School, which, privately operated according to stock system,
is yet under the jurisdiction of YMS. For a long time, YMS has always
been among the few top schools of Jiangsu Province, with regard to the
superiority of teaching achievements. In the NMET of 2000 in science,
one student won the first place.
In the NMET of 2001 in science, one won the second place. YMS has always
taken the lead in the whole province in the annual number of students
recruited by the nation's most famous universities and in the rate of
college enrollment. In the past few years, 1160 candidates from YMS
have won abundant prizes of all kinds in the competitions of maths,
physics and chemistry at provincial level and above. More than 440 won
the first prize. 22 were admitted to the State Winter Camp and 9 to
the State Training Team. A girl student named Zhang Jing who graduated
in the year 2000 won the silver medal in the 32nd Chemistry Olympic
Competition held in Denmark. Li Lanqin, vice premier of our country
and Chen Zhili, educational minister also came to inspect this school.
In order to expand excellent education resources, a new campus will
be set up in the year of 2002, sponsored and supported
by the municipal government. Covering an area of 300 mu, the new campus
will have 90 senior classes ranging from Grade One to Grade Three and
is due to operate in the autumn of 2003. In recent years, more and more
senior students from YMS have gone abroad for further study at their
own expense. In 1998, 2000 and 2001, 23 students from Senior Grade 2
went to Singapore. In the year 2001, more than 10 students from Senior
Grade 3 took their route to Europe and North America. In order to further
develop the school and meet the needs of the students and their parents,
YMS is endeavoring to cooperate with schools from other countries in
a bid to accelerate the pace of internationalized education.
