Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province, has a total area of 7.4 thousand square kilometers and some 3.79 million inhabitants.
Most the area of Nanchang lies on a vast plain. In the northeast are lakes, and the southwest are mountains and hills. The Gan River passes through it. Nanchang has a subtropical monsoon climate with an annual average temperature of 17.5oC. Annual rainfall averages 1,580 millimeter. It has 296 frost-free days.

The main industries of Nanchang are engineering, textile, food processing, and electronics. Its manufacturing of automobiles and planes also play an important role in China at present.

Nanchang is rich in agricultural, forest, and aquatic resources. Not only is it a large grain region, but it also produces cotton, peanuts, sesame, jute, fruit, lotus roots, and freshwater fish. Watermelons and grapes are excellent here.

Nanchang is one of the most important transportation hubs in the eastern part of China. As the provincial capital the city is the transportation center of Jiangxi and has convenient transportation with most other major cities.

Airport

The Changbei airport (Changbei feiji chang) is 26km north of the city, and scheduled flights go to Beijing (RMB1190), Guangzhou (RMB670), Wenzhou (RMB560), Shanghai (RMB660), Xi'an (RMB930) and other destinations within China as well as Hong Kong. Buses (RMB15) to the airport leave from the main CAAC office on Beijing xilu. A taxi will cost about RMB100.

Railway station 

Nanchang lies on the main Guangzhou-Shanghai railway line. There are more than hundred trains per day running through the city to areas all around China. There are direct trains (see train schedule) to Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Jiujiang and Jingdezhen. Express trains run daily to the Yangtze River Port of Jiujiang (2.5 hours).The railway station is located in the southeast part of city, at the end of Zhanqian lu. Bus No.2, running from the station along Bayi dadao, will take you to the city center.

The city can be reached by bus from cities like Guangzhou (18hours), Changsha (8hours), Nanjing and Shenzhen (20hours) outside of the province. It is also very convenient to travel from Nanchang to Jiujiang (1.5hours), Jingdezhen (6.5hours), Lushan (2.5hour), Jinggangshan (9hours) and other cities in Jiangxi.The Long-distance bus station is on Bayi dadao, between Renmin Square (Renmin guangchang) and the Fushan traffic circle.

City transport

Nanchang's urban transportation consists of buses, mini-buses, taxis and sightseeing buses. The bus routes are generally very good and there are numerous taxis available. Most journeys should be under RMB20 in a taxi. Maps with bus routes can be bought from the bus and train stations.
