In the southeast of Jilin Province, Tonghua City is located in the Changbai Mountain area, between 125-a15'-126-a44'E, and 40-a51'-43-a02'N. In its east it neighbors Baishan City; in its west, borders Kuandian, Huanren, Xinbin, and Qinyuan of Liaoning Province;

in its north,joins Jilin City and Liaoyuan City; and in its south, watches the Democratic People's Republic of Korea across the Yalu River. The city has a size of 15,195 km., 108-km wide from the west to the east and 238-km long from the north to the south.

Tonghua stands on the spreading area of the Changbai Mountains, with a highest elevation of 1,589 metres and a lowest elevation of 98 metres. Situated in the middle of the temperate zone, the city belongs to the mild continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Over one thousand of large and small rivers in the region are attached to two water systems: the Yalu River and Songhua River. The rich natural resources such as forest, wild economic fauna and flora, minerals, water and scenic spots constitute a cubic treasure-house of resources.

Approved by the State Council in March 1985, the Tonghua Prefectural Administrative Office was changed into a municipality directly under the provincial government, governing Meihekou and Ji'an Cities, Liuhe, Huinan and Tonghua counties, Dongchang and Erdaojiang districts. There are 23 minority nationalities such as the Korean, Manchurian, Hui, Mongolian, and Zhuang. The population totals 2.216 million.
