Dandong is located in the alongside of the Yalu river and in the southeast of Liaoning Peninsula. The Yellow Sea in the South, and the Dalian in the southeast. It borders on Anshan in the west, Benxi in the north, and the Jilin province in the northeast. She faces the city of Sinuiju of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea across the Yalu River. With the land area of 14, 950 square kilometers, the total population of Dandong is 2.4 million.0.7 million of which are urban people. Dandong is the biggest Border City in China.
Dandong with superiority of geographic location is along Yalu River, along Yellow Sea and along border. She is in the central belt of Northeast Asia, with the 210km borderline to the Korea Peninsula. The Dandong Railway is 220km from Pyongyang, 420km from Seoul, is the major land port connecting the Europe-Asia continent with Korea Peninsula, it is an important part of the Europe-Asia Railway system, that connecting the Japan, Seoul, Pyongyang, Beijing and Moscow.
Dandong has abundant natural resources. Over 51% forest area is the main timber production area in Liaoning province. Within the boundary of Dandong, there are more than 56 kinds of minerals available for exploitation. Among these minerals, the reserves of solid boron account for 94% of the national total, and the reserves of magnesite and Chinese-clay also is in the ahead of the nation. The rich water resource is of high quality with its hardness. Dandong has rich resources of ginseng, Chinese chestnut, strawberry, tussah, forest frog and prawn etc.
The industries in Dandong have solid foundations of economy and technology. It formed an industry economy system backboned by light industry, textile, machinery, and electronics. In Dandong the main products such as chemical fiber, bus, borax products wrist watch, silk, machine- manufactured paper, tooth- paste, electronic parts and components, equipment and meter, medicine, etc are for sale in nationwide. Among it the bus and wristwatch is a production base in the country, and the tussah silk is the only production base in the country. The paper making industry is long history. Now the paper-producing capacity has reached 200,000tons per year, Newly established industries have also taken some shape. Among it the color monitor and automobile audio products developed rapidly.

The airport is located 14 kilometres south of the city centre. 7 domestic cities are connected by flights, including Beijing (3 per week; 2hours), Chengdu (3 per week; 5.5hours), Ji'nan (2 per week; 2 hours), Sanya (3 per week; 7 hours), Shanghai (3 per week; 2.5hours) and Shenzhen (3 per week; 5hours).
Only 277 kilometres away from Shenyang, Dandong is connected through the Shenyang-Dandong line with several major cities in northeast China. There are daily trains to Beijing (14hours; RMB143 for hard seat ticket), Changchun (10.5hours), Dalian (10.5hours), Qingdao (24hours), Shenyang (4hours). K27 (every Sun., Tues., Thu. and Fri.) from Beijing to Pyongyang stops at Dandong at 9:35 and arrives at Pyongyang on 18:50.
The Shenyang-Dandong Highway is scheduled to be completed in September of 2002. After completion, the journey between the two cities can be shortened to only 2.5 hours. It takes only 6 hours to go from Dandong to Dalian. The Long distance bus station is only a short walk north of the railway station. There is a daily bus to Tonghua, the starting point for a tour of the Changbaishan Nature Reserve at 6:30 (10 hours). There are also buses to Changchun (10hours), Shenyang (4hours), Harbin (13hours) and Dalian (9hours).
There are two ferries every week on Sundays and Thursdays from Dandong
to Inch'on(Renchuan), Korea, they depart at 14:00 and arrive at 08:00 the
next morning.City transport: There are more than 10 lines of public buses.
