Dalian Maritime University (DMU) is one of the largest and best maritime universities and is the only key maritime institution under the Ministry of Communications, People’s Republic of China. DMU enjoys a high reputation internationally as an excellent center of maritime education and training as recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).In 1983, the Asia-PacificRegionMaritimeTrainingCenter was established at DMU by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the IMO and in 1985 a branch of the World Maritime University (WMU) was established. In 1997, DMU began the National Project 211, a plan to build one hundred national-level universities in China. In 1998, the University was awarded the ISO9001 Certificate of Quality Assurance accredited by the Norwegian Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the China Maritime Safety Administration (MSA); it became the first maritime university in China to have the ISO9001 Certificate.

DMU is located in southeastern Dalian, which is a famous coastal city in northeastern China with a population of six million. The University covers an area of one million square meters with almost half a million square meters occupied by buildings. The University owns the buildings for maritime sciences that contain fully functional equipment and facilities. There are additional buildings for maritime training and research, survival training, swimming pool, planetarium and libraries. DMU has a training dock and over 40 laboratories for teaching, training and research that also include a full mission ship-handling simulator and an engine room simulator. DMU also owns and operates an ocean-going training vessel of over 10,000 deadweight tonnage.

The University consists of 13 colleges, namely, Navigation, Marine Engineering, Information Engineering, Law, Computer Science and Technology, Automation and Electrical Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Environmental Science and Engineering, Economics and Management, Transport Engineering and Logistics, Foreign Languages, Electro-mechanics and Materials Engineering, and Continuing Education. In addition to the departments in each college, there are three other departments, Mathematics, Physics and Physical Education, which serve as support for entire University.

Presently DMU has a post-doctoral program (R&D base), 9 doctoral programs, 24 master programs, and 33 undergraduate programs. Both the Traffic Information Engineering and Control and the Marine Engineering are national key disciplines. The University is authorized to confer MBA, MPA, J.M. The current student population has risen to approximately 15,000.

DMU has a highly qualified faculty team, including 160 professors, 370 associate professors, 100 doctoral supervisors, and also has an academic agreement with 3 academicians of the National Academy of Engineering, 24 chair professors, and 110 visiting professors.

The University has an international vision regarding academic cooperation and exchange. Since 1979 when the reform and open-door policy started, DMU has established cooperative relations with more than 20 international renowned maritime institutions, which include those in Russia, USA, Japan, Great Britain, Korea, Australia, Sweden, Egypt and Vietnam. The academic relationships with these sister universities are maintained through mutual visits, faculty staff and student exchanges, joint programs and joint research projects. In March 2005, the DMU-WMU first joint MSc Program in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management was successfully inaugurated at DMU. This further enhances the University’s level of international academic cooperation. The University has established long-term cooperative relationships with international organizations and institutions, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), the Association of the Maritime Education and Training Institutes in Asia Pacific (AMETIAP), the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), Asia-Pacific Economics Cooperation (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the International Shipping Federation (ISF), the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), as well as some world famous shipping companies.

It attracts millions of domestic and international tourists each year and is rated as the first model city in the list of “the Best 500 Cities of Environmental Protection in the World” named by the UN Environmental Protection Department in the year of 2000.

Admission Requirements of Overseas Students

Qualifications for Admission:

• For Bachelor’s Degree Programs:

The applicants must hold a high school diploma, be in good health and aged under 25, with a Chinese proficiency level basically sufficient to follow university courses given in Chinese. On passing the exams set by the university in accordance with the program chosen, the applicants can be admitted to do a bachelor’s degree program at the university. If the applicants are not proficient enough in Chinese to follow the program, a one year’s remedial course of Chinese can be arranged.

• For Master’s Degree Programs:

For admission to the master’s degree program, the applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, be in good health and aged under 35. Admission is based on the recommendation of two professors (full or associate) and the result of the examination set by the university. Courses are generally given in Chinese. (The requirements set for Chinese proficiency are the same as those set for bachelor’s degree applicants.)

• For Doctor’s Degree Program:

For admission to the doctor’s degree program, the applicants must hold a master’s degree, be in good health and aged under 40. Admission is based on the recommendation of two professors (full or associate) or experts of equivalent status and result of the examination set by the university.

Application Procedure and Period

• The applicants should contact this school for the Application Form for Overseas Students.
• The applicants should submit the filled-in Application Form; the last academic degree certificate and transcript; and two half length photos of the applicants (3cm×4cm) to the International Cooperation & Exchange Office (ICEO).
• A reply will be sent as soon as possible by ICEO on receipt of the above materials. The Admission Notice, the Application for Entry Form (JW202) and Physical Examination Form will be sent to the enrolled applicants, who can apply for an entry visa to China by presenting the above-mentioned documents, personal passports and the Physical Examination Records to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their respective countries.

MSc in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management

This programme is organized by WorldMaritimeUniversity and DalianMaritimeUniversity. The goal of this programme is to meet the need for high-level professionals capable of handling increasingly complex and important issues of maritime safety and marine environment protection in the context of ever-increasing production. To understand the issue, to take on the challenges and to find effective solutions to the problems, inter-disciplinary and integrated knowledge and expertise is needed.

The entire programme is delivered in English, using English-language teaching material. The formal programme is delivered over 15 months in three sections, which are pre-requisite study, specialization study (about 10 months) and project research paper (about 5 months). Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the degree of Master of Science by the WorldMaritimeUniversity.
