Introduction

Shenyang Normal University, originated from Northeast Education Institute, is a tertiary normal university of Liaoning Province. It was established in 1951 and was one of the two oldest normal universities in Northeastern China. The famous educationalist Dong Chun-cai, Wu Bo-xiao and Che Xiang-chen were its presidents successively.

For years, based on the principle of serving the fundamental education with a focus on teachers training, it has established an open educational system with its own characteristics by combining teachers education with non-teachers education, pre-service training and post-service training at various levels, scales and with different functions. Its education is to maintain general tertiary teachers' education as the major task supported, at the same time, by continuing education and international students education.

At present, the total enrollment of the whole university is 27,000 among which there are 13,000 undergraduate students, 2,300 3-year non-degree vocational students, 9,000 adult students, 700 graduate students, 1400 postgraduate diploma students, and 158 international students.

In recent years, the University's educational capability and quality have been greatly improved. Subjects and subject structures have been perfected and upgraded. It now consists of 8 schools, 25 departments. Now it has 29 majors, 21 of which offer master degrees. There are 62 various kinds of labs with advanced facilities; and there are 28 various research institutes such as the education research institute and the insects research institute, etc. The new campus covers a land area of 1,099,100 square meters, of which the construction space is 426,000 square meters. The new library whose floor space by now the biggest among the university libraries in northeastern provinces has a collection of 1,362,000 books. The new campus has a network system of the provincial and national top levels. Besides, all the professors, associate professors and teachers with Ph.D have their own offices.

The University has 1262 faculty members, including 132 professors and 566 associate professors. It also has some nationally famous experts. The University has joint educational programs with more than 20 universities form U.S.A, Japan and Russia etc., mainly for exchanging teachers and doing cooperative researches.

Sticking to the University Motto "Love the Motherland and the teaching career, pursue the truth and creativeness" the University aims at cultivating the students' creative, initiative and practical ability, focuses on the reform in the teaching materials, contents, and curriculum, with a complete credit hour system being carried out. Recently, it has succeeded in having students; service socialized.

In the new century, the whole faculty and staff will adhere to the modern and international education concepts and go all out to make the university a Multi-disciplinary university with teachers' education as its unique characteristics.
