Shaanxi University of Science & Technology (SUST), as a governmental school, was founded in 1958 in Beijing, China, where it was firstly named the Beijing Institute of Light Industry. The Institute was moved to Xianyang, Shaanxi Province in 1970 when it was renamed the Northwest Institute of Light Industry. In 1977, the Institute was cited as one of the 88 top national universities by the State Council. In 2002, the Institute obtained its present name: Shanxi University of Science & Technology, after the approval of the Ministry of Education of China.

The university offers seven major fields of incorporating engineering, science, liberal arts, management, medicine, law and economics. There are three graduate programs leading to PhD; twenty-two graduate programs leading to Master’s Degree (Equivalent)of science, engineering and MBA，and forty one undergraduate programs leading to Bachelor’s Degree or diploma. Thus the university has become a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary university with studies and research in pulp and paper making, materials, leather, food, chemical, mechanical, computer, electronic and electrical, information, environment, electronic information, applied chemistry, art, design, language, media, industry & commerce, marketing, administration, human resource, pharmacy, etc.. At present, the university has over 18,000 undergraduate students and over 600 graduate students. The university is proud of more than 1800 faculty and staff members, all of whom are highly qualified. Among them are over 400 with full-professorships and associate-professorships.

The university maintains fourteen colleges: College of Paper-Making Engineering, School of Material Science and Engineering, College of Resource and Environment, College of Life Science and Engineering, College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Design, College of Computer and Information Engineering, College of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Science, College of Management, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, College of Vocational and Technical Education, College of Continuing Education, Foreign Languages Department. The university also has three major Divisions of Education, which are Graduate School, Physical Education, and Modern Educational Technology Center.

Our university has six key disciplines, eight major laboratories and engineering R & D centers at the provincial or ministerial levels. Our fixed assets are currently worth 78,230,000 Yuan RMB. Our library houses over 800,000 volumes of books, over 2,000 types of periodicals and magazines/journals and well equipped modern electronic reading rooms with the interneted computers.

The university is authorized by the government to recruit international students and employ foreign professors/experts. In the past 20 years, the university has held the friendly relationship with many overseas universities/institutions in USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Russia, Japan, Germany, etc..

The university holds two campuses: one is situated in Xianyang city, the ancient capital of the first unified dynasty in Chinese history - Qin dynasty, and the other is in Xi'an, the capital city of Shanxi Province and both cities have a history of 3,000 years. The campuses have totally a coverage of 110 hectares.
