Brief introduction of Xi'an Middle School

Xi'an Middle School, which is located inside the North Gate of Xi'an City, dates from 1907, and was the first public school set up in the province at the time. It is now the only middle school under the direct control of Shaanxi Educational Bureau. It is also the vice chairman of National Association of Education Science Research of Well-known Middle Schools, member of National Union of Key Middle Schools, and Olympic Mathematics Contest Training Centre of the province. The experimental classes organized by Shaanxi Educational Bureau, the Provincial Science Society and Mathematics Society are also in this school. The school is also an out-door opening school. The AFS program of the Chinese Education Department is carried out in the school.

The school covers an area of 48 mu and has a building area of 40,000 square metres. The school has a multiple administration building, four teaching buildings, a science and teaching building, a ground track field, a football field, six basketball courts, students'apartment blocks, and dinning-halls for both the teachers and the students. Since 1999, with the help and the great concern of Shaanxi Educational Bureau, the school has put forward the new policy “high standards, high jumping-off point and modernization”. All of the staff and offices have been equipped with computers, which have been connected to the local area net. The school has also built network of multi-medium teaching system, multi-computer rooms; multi-functional classrooms, multi-medium language labs, network control center, school TV station and an assembly hall that can hold 570 people. Each classroom is equipped with a TV set, a recorder and a projector. All the equipment is the most advanced in the whole country. In order to meet the increasing needs of the times, Xi'an Middle School has invested 3,000,000,000 yuan RMB and a new school covering an area of 250 mu in the north suburb is under construction right now. Its purpose is to build a modern, high standard school, which will be the first class level in China.

There are 191 teachers in the school, of whom 149 are full-time teachers. Among the teachers, one is honored as "expert who has made great contributions", 7 are honored as "outstanding teachers"; 85 people have been appointed as high ranked teachers and 7 people, are honored as "excellent teachers" 38 teachers have got master's degree. 61 teachers are still studying for their master's degree. 26 people are honored as outstanding teachers, outstanding head-teachers and model workers by the state, the province and the city. 31 people work as directors or members of professional societies of the province. Now there are 33 classes and more than 2,000 students in the school.

The administration body of the school is one center with 4 subsystems, 9 function departments and 3 multitude organizations. One center is the Principals'Working Meeting, the 4 subsystems are the Moral Education Working System, Teaching Management System, Logistic Service System and Democratic Decision-making System. The 9 function departments are the Administration Office, Publicity and Contact Section, Teaching Section, Educational Research Section, Audio-visual Education Section, Moral Education Section, Security Section, Rear Service Section, Accommodation Section. The 3 multitude organizations are the Trade Union, the Youth League Committee and the Students’ Union.

Ever since, Xi’an Middle School has been holding the idea of running the school with: "cultivating the people as its base, innovation as its soul, science research as its leading and its existence on quality." With the aim of running the school with: "having the highest teaching quality, first-class team of teachers, first-class level of management and first-class benefit of school-running", it has developed its own teaching style of "preciseness, well-knit base attaching its importance to knowledge, ability and quality" and learning style of “diligence, enterprising, factualistic and innovation." It has also created its own special characteristics "with education and science research as its guidance, with nurturance education as its base, with innovation education as its core to carry out an all-round quality education." It has got a tremendous achievement, therefore, it is honored "a shining pearl in Shaanxi, a cradle of outstanding persons". In recent ten years, it has won 41 prizes in maths, physics, chemistry, biology, IT and so on in Shaanxi province. Among these 1108 students got prizes, 26 of whom took part in the national finals, representing the province. The students Xue Yuan, Chu Huaixiang, Chen Yang, Yue Liang, Wen Yuwei, Yang Yongliang, Bai Qing won the Number One Scholars of science, art and foreign languages in the national matriculation examinations. 99.9% of the graduates were admitted to universities and colleges.

In order to meet the needs of high lever of modern education in the new century and the open-type and precursory development, the school manages to develop communication with the other leading schools domestic and abroad. It has become sister school of some famous schools like Pembroke School in Australia, Nanjing No.1 Middle School, Middle School attached to Qinghua University. Agreements have been signed and exchange of teachers and students between the schools has already started. Friendly communication and co-operation between Xi’an Middle School and the schools is deepening and widening.
