Introduction

Established in 1979, the Intensive Language Training Center (ILTC) is under the auspices of the State Ministry of Education and Sichuan University (SCU). The Center is mainly engaged in training state-sponsored candidates who are going abroad as well as teachers of our university. In addition, the Center also enrolls students sent by industry along with self-financed individuals.

Four language-training programs: English; Japanese; German; and Russian, are available in our Center. Different courses are offered to suit the various language levels of our students. The faculty consists of thirty-three full-time Chinese teachers and twelve foreign teachers and experts recruited on an annual basis.

Our teaching programs have earned an excellent reputation: Ph.D. program trains the highest-level students of our university; Test-Taking Program prepares the candidates for the national exams pave the way for those who wish to study abroad. Four-Skill Program caters for the students at different levels of English ability, Cultural Exchange Program provides the best learning environment for the improvement of listening and speaking skills.

The Center is housed in a well-maintained six-story building, in which there are not only well-furnished classrooms but also modern language labs. The audiovisual office of the Center supplies modem facilities to meet the demands of teaching and foreign language testing. Also established in our Center are "The international Education Information Center" and "The Foreign Languages Testing Office". All major tests of foreign languages such as GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, BEC, IELTS, JPT and WSK are held or to be held here.
The main research of the center focuses on intensive language training. Our teachers have compiled a number of textbooks and published more than 100 research articles.

The Center is well known for its first rate teaching quality and strict management. Since 1979, the Center has trained more than 10,000 students sent by the State Ministry of Education and those sent by industry. Our students are scattered all over the world; they are playing an important role in their respective fields by using foreign language effectively.

In accordance with the requirements of the State Ministry of Education, the Center will continue to be one of the major bases in this country for carrying out foreign language training and sparing no efforts to serve thepolicy of "opening to the outside world."
