C: From July 28 to August 10 (2-week for students class)

Class and Activity Time:

8:00--11:30 am for morning session
2:00--5:30 pm for afternoon session
7:00--8:30 pm for evening session

Course: Spoken English, Conversation, Teaching Methodology

Class Size: 25-30 middle school students or teachers

Participants: Middle school students aged from 13-18 or middle school English teachers.

Goals: To improve the listening and speaking ability of students or the teaching skills and methodology of teachers. The program has been operating for several years and the intent is to provide a "summer camp" opportunity rather than an academic emphasis.

Workload: 6-7 hours a day and 5-6 days a week with Sundays off and one or two Saturdays touring the local city or towns for each program. The emphasis appears to be to have fun while being immursed in English as the communication tool. One teacher will be in charge of one or two different classes. For some classes a Chinese English teacher will be provided as an assistant, who can take off some workload. Teachers can divide the classes into oral English, listening, free reading, video showing, slide showing, students performance, singing, playing games, party, speech, English corner and other non-academic settings, etc. Although it seems the teachers have a lot of periods, yet if arranged properly, they will not feel so and they will have a lot of fun with the students. Classes can also be held outside the classroom. Current and former list memebers have taught in this setting and indicate that it is fun and much can be enjoyed while using English.

Lesson Plan: Teachers should find and bring to China some material for trainning the oral English of students or the teaching methodology of Chinese English teachers. They are free to conduct and organize their classes. Usually every class lasts 45 minutes with 5-10 minutes for break. Teachers should also prepare some English games, songs and activities in the classroom.

Teaching Material: All the teaching material should be compiled and printed in English-speaking countries with native language. Foreign teachers are required to bring some original copy and get them copied during the program. They are free to use their own material and teaching methods. The camp itself will provide some ready-made books for the students. Copies will be limited to a certain amout.

Teaching Facilities: Some of the classrooms have air conditioner, while some only have electric fans. All classrooms have tape recorder. Some have TV set and projectors. Some schools have computers and copy machine.

Hotels: As the camps are rotated in a few different cities and this is a short-term summer camp so the teachers are usually staying in off-campus hotels, which are usually near the camp for each program. The organizer is only paying for the basic room service, not including the extra service like food, drink, laundry, message, IDD call and Cable Internet, etc. The teachers usually shared hotel room during each program, including one day before and after the program. The hotel room has two beds, air-conditioner, local telephone, hot shower and other living utensils.

Meals: Usually the organizer will provide the free three meals with the students and teachers in the camp cafeteria for each program, including one day before and after the program. However, if the teachers do not like the cafeteria meals and want to eat outside on their own account during the whole program, they can get some meal stipend of Rmb920 yuan for program A, Rmb650 yuan for program B or C, Rmb1200 yuan for program D. Meal money is paid on the first day of classes.

Food: Nowdays in China you will find lots of international chain-stores and can get anything you want for food in supermarkets and local shops.

Tour: Usually the organizer will arrange one or two-day free local tour on Saturdays for foreign teachers during each program. The staff and students will also show them around the city and local sceneries during other times. Chinese cities, towns and villages are very specific and attractive.

Internet: Usually some of the camps have campus computer rooms with Internet connection, which the teachers can use freely. However, if there are no such computer rooms, the teachers can only use the nearby Internet Bar on their own account.

Transportation: The teachers are responsible for their own International and domestical airfare and transportation to and from the camp.

Insurance: The teachers are responsible for their own travel insurance during the program.

Salary (selective):
Program A: Rmb4500 plus selective Rmb920 for meals
Program B: Rmb3000 plus selective Rmb650 for meals
Program C: Rmb3000 plus selective Rmb650 for meals
