Founded on August 1, 1951, Yunnan Nationalities University (YNU) is located in Kunming, a beautiful city with mild weather all year round. YNU is one of the key universities in Yunnan and also one of the earliest ethnic universities in China.
YNU is a showcase for the publicity of Yunnan to the outside world for its ethic diversity and cultural diversity. Up to now, more than 20,000 international guests and friends from over 80 nations and regions in all continents of the world have paid visits to the university and many of them have highly praised the university. Among the visitors there are sovereigns, senior government officials, experts and scholars, including Ho Chi Minh, former chairman of Vietnam, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, His Majesty King Harold V of Norway, Dr. Henry Alfred Kissinger, former U.S. Secretary of State, General Than Shwe, chairman of State Peace and Development Council (formerly State Law and Order Restauration Council) of Myanmar, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, and Danish Prince Joachim. The Norwegian King, the Nippon Electronic Company and some overseas Chinese have established scholarship funds in the university. YNU is one of the earliest institutions to enroll international students in Yunnan, keeping close ties with 46 universities and academic institutions of more than 10 countries including the United States, Norway, Japan and Korea. YNU now has signed agreements with Daejin University of Korea, Burapha University of Thailand and some other foreign universities on mutual recognition of the students’ course credits and diplomas as well as student exchange programs. YNU boasts unique sights of ethnic cultures with students from the 26 ethnic groups in Yunnan studying on the campuses, free to speak their ethnic languages and wear their ethnic costumes. The university arranges special activities and dinners on occasions of ethnic festivities, such as the Water Splashing Festival of the Dai people, the March Fair of the Bai people, the Torch Festival of the Yi people, the Fast-breaking Day of the Hui people, the Sanduo Festival of the Naxi people, and the Munao Festival of the Jingpo people, which make the university a land of joys. School of International Education
SIE has accumulated a great deal of experience in teaching Chinese to international students. It now offers degree programs for undergraduate and graduate students as well as certificate programs for people who want to study Chinese but do not intend to earn a degree, such as scholars or people with master or doctoral degrees. For certificate students, SIE opens Primary Level, Intermediate Level and Advanced Level classes. The class sizes and teaching modes vary according to the purposes, Chinese levels and numbers of the students. Meanwhile, individual tuition programs are also available by request. SIE focuses its teaching on the improvement of the students’ linguistic abilities and skills by means of all-round training in listening, speaking, reading and writing by following a lecture-practice teaching mode. The curricula are well designed in reference to the specific needs of different students. To improve students’ linguistic abilities and skills, SIE also arranges extracurricular activities such spring and fall outings, sport games, parties, sightseeing visits, investigation tours and so on, which will enable the students to have an insight into the Chinese culture and make their life more colorful. SIE has an excellent staff to provide the international students with all necessary services, and a high-quality faculty competent for their teaching jobs after two decades of operation. Among the faculty members, there are professors, associate professors and lecturers, both full-time and part-time. Many of the teachers are distinguished experts in their fields, seven are certified teachers to teach Chinese as a foreign language----this number is much larger than those of such certificate holders in other universities in Yunnan, two teachers are members of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, quite a few have attended domestic and international symposiums on teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and many teachers ever taught Chinese at universities of other countries. With rich teaching experiences, many teachers have published essays on Chinese teaching, three teachers have jointly published Practical Chinese as a Foreign Language: Conversations about Yunnan, a textbook, and one teacher has published Chinese Idioms for Non-Chinese Speakers, a monograph. SIE has been cautious in employing teachers. Full-time or part-time, they must be profound in linguistic theories with a high proficiency of Chinese to guarantee the teaching quality.
