Shaoxing City lies in the south coast of Hangzhou Bay between 29°15′—30°11′ north latitude and 119°53′—119°15′ east longitude. Shaoxing has a landmass of 7,900 sq km, and the total population of the county is 4.2 million. Under its direct jurisdiction, there are 6 cities, counties and districts at county level, they are: Zhuji, Shangyu, and Shengzhou cities, Shaoxing, Xingchang counties, and Yuecheng District. Yuecheng District is the seat of the municipal government.
Shaoxing enjoys a venerated history, as early as 6,000 years ago, people began to live on this land. The city is among China’s first 24 nationally famed historical cities. And 2,400 years ago, Shaoxing was capital of ancient Yue Kingdom.

Local cuisine takes advantage of the wine that runs through the city’s figurative veins: Shaoxing Rice Wine. This cooking wine, produced from a special kind of glutinous rice, is often added to restaurant dishes and lends a potent and distinctive flavor. The primary dish to try is the Shaoxing chicken, prepared by marinating the breast meat in the wine.
