Introduction


The University of Nottingham, UK was established in the city of Nottingham in 1881, and it was the first new university to receive a Royal Charter after World War II. The University of Nottingham ranks 6th in the UK University rankings and has been consistently ranked in the world's top 100 universities.

The University is consistently in the Top 10 of most UK education rankings and is at present a member of Universitas 21, a group of elite international research universities. In October 2003, two Nottingham graduates and former professors were awarded Nobel Prizes for Medicine and Economics.

On 12 March, 2003, The University of Nottingham made a historic decision to build the University of Nottingham Ningbo campus in China.It is the first top 100 university to establish an independent campus on the Chinese mainland.

The University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, in partnership with ZhejiangWanliUniversity, is generously supported by the Ningbo Municipal Government, Zhejiang provincial government with support from the Chinese Ministry of Education and the government at the very highest levels. It is the very first foreign co-operative university in the People’s of Republic of China.The establishment of the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China provides you an opportunity to participate in a first class educational experience.

The 60-hectare University of Nottingham Ningbo, China is located in the beautiful port city of Ningbo.There are no campus walls or bells ringing to signal the beginning of class.This is a university which implements a British style education.All the characteristic features of the University of Nottingham, UK appear in the Ningbo campus; the blue Nottingham lake, the pleasing European style architecture, and an exact replica of the famous TrentBuilding.

The Teaching Quality Assurance System at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China is the same as at the University of Nottingham, UK.Teaching materials and systems are from Nottingham, UK, all lecturers and tutors of the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China are employed by the Nottingham campus.Courses are delivered entirely in English and students at the Ningbo campus can share internet learning resources with students at Nottingham, UK.All the bachelor and master degree courses are exactly the same as those in the UK.Degree certificates will be issued by the University of Nottingham, UK.

At present, the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China has:

A variety of teaching formats are used at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, including lectures, seminars, language classes and tutorials. The teaching staff expect the students to be well-prepared and to take an active role in seminars and classes.Opportunities exist to learn a language, such as Chinese, French, German or Spanish.

In addition to the timetabled classes, students are expected to do a significant amount of self-study. This includes completing set homework, conducting research, coursework preparation, group work activities, exam revision and independent study to further develop learning skills.

Entry Requirement:

Undergraduate Degrees:

Senior High School Graduation Examination with a grade of at least 80% or above.

Applicants should have achieved a minimum Mathematics grade of B or equivalent. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age at the start of the course.

Students from 13-year education systems, or who have successfully completed a foundation year or with required IB/A-Level exam results can apply for direct entry to the second year of an undergraduate course.

Typical IB offer for direct entry to the second year is 32 and A-Level offer is BBB. Applicants are considered individually on the bases of a Junior College Diploma or a period of study at a recognised university.

Postgraduate Degrees:

The University offers two types of postgraduate programme: a one-year direct entry postgraduate degree programme and a two-year postgraduate programme with Year-one as a preparatory year and Year-two as the degree year.

We consider applicants solely on the basis of their academic merits.Normally, applicants should hold a good first degree with at least a second class honours, or an equivalent qualification.

In addition to the University entrance requirement, international students whose first language is not English must provide satisfactory evidence of their proficiency in English.

English Language Entry Requirements:

First year Undergraduate and Pre-Masters

IELTS 5.5 with the writing band no less than 5.0 or

  • TOEFL (paper based) 525 + TWE no less than 4.0 or
  • TOEFL (computer based) 196 + TWE no less than 4.0

One-year Masters OR Direct entry to Undergraduate (Year 2)

  • IELTS 6.5 with the writing band no less than 6.0 or
  • TOEFL (paper based) 575 + TWE no less than 4.5 or
  • TOEFL (computer based) 232 + TWE no less than 4.5.

Other qualifications such as A-levels, O-levels or GCSE may also be acceptable.Please contact the Admissions Office for advice.

Tuition Fees 2006-2007

Undergraduate courses: RMB 80,000* (≈£5,715) per annum

Postgraduate Courses:

 

One-year direct entry

RMB 80,000 per annum

Two-year: Pre-Masters and followed by a one-year Masters

RMB 60,000 per annum

The current exchange rate is RMB 14.0 to the UK pound sterling.

Accommodation

On-campus accommodation is provided to all students.All rooms are fully furnished and equipped with a telephone and a computer point which enable students to make and receive telephone calls and access the University’s data network from their bedrooms. Rooms are available for single occupancy or sharing with other students if required.

Accommodation fees:

Single Room:RMB 12,000 per annum

Double Room:RMB 2,600 per annum

Single Room Hall Residence also provides the following facilities:

    • two public laundry rooms on each floor equipped with two washing machines in each room
    • two public rooms for cooking and dinning on each floor equipped with refrigerator, microwave oven, induction cooker, electric cooker, dinner table and tablewares in each kitchen.

The cost of living in Ningbo for a single international student is estimated at 2500-3,500 RMB (≈£180-£250) per month to include accommodation, meals and entertainment and other necessities depending on life style.This compares to approximately £700 per month in the UK. All of our dormitories have resident wardens to support students if they ever need help or advice.

One convenience of living in the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China is having a shopping street.It is located in the students’ residence area, and consists of a coffee shop, small supermarket, fruit store, gift ship, hair salon, post office, Bank of China ATM machine, etc.There is also a shopping complex called SundayPlaza in the Ningbo University Park.It is a 15 minutes alkfrom the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China.
