Since liberation, the school has been widely recognized as a top school in ZhejiangProvince. Its honors have grown from being named a “KeySchool in the Province” to one of the “Best Key Schools in the Province”, to “the Best First-Class Key School in the Province.” In 1999 the Province chose Xiaoshi as one of two “Bases for Creative Teaching of Science,” and it was chosen to be the “Experimental School of Modern Teaching Techniques” by the National Ministry of Education in 2000. Over the past century, the school has inherited and developed its tenets: “Love the country and love scientific knowledge” and “Be adaptable, be realistic and be steady in making progress.” The school’s philosophy is to “stick to principles, follow laws of development, lay a sound foundation, and breed qualified people.” The school strives to cultivate high-quality students and to become a modern first-class school with a good school spirit. It promotes all-around development, stresses strong foundations, values quality and benefits the people. The school sets high and strict demands for its students. The school also advocates hard work and emphasizes reative thinking. In addition, Xiaoshi values a practical style of study: practical, realistic, efficient and honest.
Xiaoshi students, besides having good foundations, are also known for being highly competent and having great potential for further development. More than 30,000 students have graduated from Xiaoshi in its ninety-year history, including 13 academy members and Tong Dizhou, a famous biologist. Tsung-Dao Lee, the Nobel Prize winner of Physics in 1957, in a letter to Xiaoshi, praised it as “having bred up thousands of excellent students who have made great achievements in their own fields.” A lot of Xiaoshi graduates have been admitted to foreign universities and the majority of students enter China’s top universities. Xiaoshi students are always among the top scorers in the Province in graduation and college entrance examinations. Xiaoshi has won numerous academic competitions at all levels. In the past 10 years, Xiaoshi has won 26 group championships in national mathematics, physics, and chemistry competitions. Up to ten students come first in he province in the national mathematics and physics competitions for senior high and junior high school students annually. Five students have been chosen by the China National Team of Physics and Mathematics. One female student won the national physics competition final. Another five have been awarded the “Song Qinglin Scholarship” and the “Prize for Juvenile Talents” in ZhejiangProvince. Xiaoshi won the first prize in the national art competition and its performance was staged in Beijing.

Recently, two have been given special subsidy from the State Council, three have been awarded the title of Experts with Outstanding Achievements (one at the provincial level and the other at the city level), and one has won the award of Teacher with Lifetime Achievements in the province. The school is also proud of having nine Province-level Prestigious Teachers, nine Province-level Star Teachers and eight City-level Teachers of Fame. Xiaoshi has also established a friendly relationship with some well-known schools in the United States, Australia, Japan, Singapore and Germany. It participates in teacher and student exchange programs with many of these schools. In 2001, a delegation led by the president of YaleUniversity, Dr. Richard Levin, paid a visit to Xiaoshi. In the same year, we established a sister-school relationship with HopkinsSchool in New Haven, Connecticut. Both schools sent exchange teachers to work in the other school. So far more than 7 teachers have benefited from this program. Meanwhile, Xiaoshi also has an agreement with Perth College, Scotland, which allows 8 Xiaoshi teachers each year to be sent for language training at Perth and two Perth teachers every year to teach at Xiaoshi for one year. Xiaoshi also has strong ties with three distinguished schools in Singapore, namely, Nanyang Girls’ High, Yishun Junior College and the Chinese High. Each year more than 20 teachers and students from both sides exchange visits for about half a month. Besides, Xiaoshi also has set up a program with Heinrich-Heine Gesamtschule in Germany. Every three years, Xiaoshi welcomes around 30 German students on its campus and the German host families have the pleasure of having Chinese visitors for about ten days. Moreover, the WittsEducationCenter in Hong Kong is also sending foreign teachers to teach at Xiaoshi. Each year, Xiaoshi welcomes numerous groups of visitors from home and abroad.
