Zhoushan City (also Zhoushan Archipelago) is located in East Zhejiang and outside Hangzhou Bay. The city is composed of 1,390 islands, which brings the name of "Thousand-Island City" to Zhoushan. Among these island, Zhoushan Island, covering a land area of 523 sq km, is the province's largest island, as well as China's fourth largest one. Zhoushan Archipelago has a total area of 22,000 sq km, including 1,440 sq km of landmass. The city's population is 985,000. Under Zhoushan's direct jurisdiction, there are 4 counties and districts-Daishan and Shengsi counties, and Dinghai and Putuo districts. And Dinghai District is the seat of the municipal government.
Zhoushan is China's famous fishery base, it is one of the state's three largest fisheries. With aquatic processing as lead, shipbuilding, salt, machinery, electronic instrument, textile, and plastics form the city's industrial mainstay. Apart from marine products, Putuo Buddha Tea, Jintang plum, Gaoxie red bayberry, Dinghai white goose are also the city's specialties.
Zhoushan is a marine transport hub of China. There are over 1,500 km of coastline fitting for building docks. Aoshan Island of Zhoushan, containing a 250,000-tonnage dock , a 80,000-tonnage dock, and a 900,000-ton oil tank, is China's largest oil transfer base. And so far, 5 other large-scale oil transfer bases are still under construction.
Zhoushan possesses numerous scenic spots and historical sites. Mount Putuo, a state-level scenic site, is one of China's four eminent Buddhist mountains. Zhujiajian Island, Jihu Grand Beach in Shengsi County (covering a sandy beach area of over 660, 000 sq km), Mount Daishan are excellent tourism and vacation resorts.
